I have a Sony STR-DE545 home theater system, bought back in late 2000.
The remote - RM-U304 came with it and has been doing fine until recently. A few months ago, I lost control of the master volume buttons. I thought those buttons may have just broke. Last week, the remote stopped working completely. Yes, I checked the batteries, and the remote is rarely used, mostly during movies.
So, after searching this web site, I have learned some new information about programing remote controls. I have seen the page posted by Ron Aronson regarding the resetting of remotes for Sony systems - [Link: remotecentral.com]
However, I could not find the DE545 listed on the page (am I blind?). As explained on that page: "If your receiver is new or and/or not listed here, see your owner’s manual. For the receiver, see the section “Adjustments using the SET UP button”, usually around page 35-40, and for the remote, see “Selecting the mode of the remote”."
The only SET UP adjustments listed in the manual is "Selecting the 5.1CH video input". There is nothing else listed regarding the remote or selecting the mode of the remote.
Basicly, I was wondering if anyone knows how I can reset the remote to its original configuration. I am guessing that I (or my 7mo old son) pushed a combination of buttons to reprogram the remote.
I already reset the receiver to its factory settings, and that didn't help.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
Thanks, Tim

The link you gave only tells you how to change the command modes of the receiver and its remote. Since your receiver was made before Sony started using command modes, it is not included in my thread. But this only applies when using your receiver with another universal remote, not with the RM-U304.
As you said, there is absolutely nothing in the manual about your remote, so it appears it is not programmable, and a reset wouldn’t help if the remote died.
You can get a replacement for this remote here at a reasonable price. Since you don’t have a complicated setup, evidenced by the fact that you have been using the original remote all these years, this would probably be the best solution to your problem.
If you did buy a cheaper universal remote, you would not get all of the functions and, since your remote doesn’t work anymore, you couldn’t learn the missing functions from it.

Tim,
I've found that you can reset your remote control by doing the following:
Stand in front of your receiver. Remove one of the batteries from the remote. While the battery is removed, simultaneously hold down the AV I/O, I/O and volume - buttons. Then, re-insert the battery while you are holding these buttons down. (it's a little tricky, but can be done) The remote should re-set to factory standards, and the receiver will turn right on.
