I have an intermittant problem with 2 identical Sony RMT-V402 VCR remote contol
units. The units fail ever few days and go dead. If I remove and reseat the batteries
then recode the unit it will work fine controling a Sony VCR and RCA TV. After
sitting a day of so it fails and will not function in any way. I bought 2 Sony VCR's
and the 2 contol units came with the new VCRs. I wonder if anyone else has had
battery seating problems?

I just bought a DVD player at a pawn shop with the RMT-V402 remote and the remote does not work. I tried the FAQ's at Sony's website and nothing worked. How do you recode the unit?

The RM-TV402 is a remote designed to operate a VCR, so I don't think it will work with your DVD.

You probably don't see any buttons on there which look they work functions on a DVD, do you?

I have also had problems with this remote. I think the battery contacts lose connection long enough for the remote to forget what code you've programmed. I know I have to reprogram mine every few days. And sometimes I have to remove the battery cover and rub the batteries around in the contacts to get the remote to work at all.

But now, a really weird story.

When my VCR was almost a year old, 6 buttons on the RMT-V402 stopped working. Enter, Replay, Comm. Skip, Search, X2, and Slow. The TV functions went dead too. Sony suggested "pressing each button twice to reset the remote" - well, no interpretation of that (e.g. press 1 twice, then 2 twice... or all buttons once, then all buttons again) helped. Since it was still (barely) under warranty, they sent me a new remote. They told me to throw away the old one, but I removed the batteries and threw it in my junk box.

Fast forward another year, to last November. The second remote failed in EXACTLY the same way. Obviously a design defect, but Sony would not give me a third remote. I pulled the original remote out of the junk bin. Lo and behold, it was working again. Until last week, when I swapped them again. And again this morning.

Clearly there's something in the electronics of this remote which locks up. Taking the batteries out for at least a few days seems to allow it to reset. The "time between failures" has been shrinking, which is probably not a good sign.

I hope this helps someone. My advice for anyone with this remote is to get another one from Sony while you're still under warranty.

The remote that I put back into service on 2/26 (less than 3 weeks ago) just failed and I had to "swap" them once again.

Does anyone have any comment about this problem that I'm seeing on a quite repeatable basis?

And another failure after only 2 days. This time, the other remote hasn't reset itself yet. So I've got 2 dead remotes now.

after reading LMELMAN's story, I realized what it might be (I had EXACTLY the same buttons fail). I just took the batteries out of the unit and then shorted the two lower contact at the bottom of the remote (using a paperclip) ... and now it works.

I was just looking online to buy a new remote until finding this site and now I've got it fixed, thanks guys and I hope my suggestions helps y'all!

This is good to know. Next time one of my remotes fails, I will try it. Where did you get the idea?

I think he's just taking a bent paperclip and bridging the two lower battery contacts.

Not techno savvy at all.. What exactly does "bridging the two battery contacts "mean?

I tried touching a paper clip to both of the whole as at the bottom of the remote with no results. Can you clarify your advice? Thanks.

What you're doing sounds about right, but it's not my advice...

I just had a slightly different problem with my V402B. It was no longer able to control my Sony TV, so I tried to reset the control codes for a Sony TV. As soon as I did that, the VCR functions would stop working. The only way to get the VCR functions to work was to remove, and reinsert the batteries. As long as I didn't switch the remote to TV mode, and hit the power button, the VCR controls would work. I managed to open the unit (broke a couple of the retaining clips), and clean inside, but that didn't help. Then I tried Paxet's trick (shorting out the battery contacts), and poof! My remote control is now fully functional. Must be a master reset or something. I'm pretty sure it's not in the owner's manual. It should be!

I think that I found a solution to my problems with the Sony RMT-V402.

After searching the internet and finding no solution,
I contacted Sony Technical Support On Line Chat.

The tech told me to:
1. remove the batteries.
2. press each and every button one time.
3. install the batteries.

It has been 2 weeks now since I did that,
and I have had ZERO problems.

Prior to that I had to break battery contact about every 1-2 days.

I'm not saying that this will solve everybody's problem,
but it can't hurt to try it once.
