I am having trouble programming my Sony rm-av2100 to control my Home theatre System model STR-K670P (which is the receiver part of Sony HT-DDW670) and Sony Surround System DAV-FX500.

Unfortunately, I do not have either of the original remotes.

Can anyone help me out? Is the Sony RM-AV2100 remote even compatible with either or both?  If it is, or if there is a way to have them work, please help me.

You can use the 2100 for the STR-K670P receiver but you will need to change the command mode on the receiver to AV1 per the instructions in this thread [Link: remotecentral.com]

Without the original remote to learn from you will be limited to whatever commands are preloaded in the 2100, which isn't a whole lot.

You cannot use the 2100 for the DAV-FX500 because Sony did not put any Dream System codes in any remotes until they made the RM-VL600 and the RM-V310, which were supposed to work but never did.

These are not made by Sony, but the OneForAll URC-6820/8820/10820 have a code, 1658, for Dream Systems.

I have never heard from anyone to verify if it works, but you can usually return these if they don't work.

Edmund might have some ideas on this, if he cares to chime in.

The OneForAll URC-8820 and 10820 have Audio 1658, and we know it works. There is a similar setup code Audio 1858, with a few function codes which are different. (Sears, <$20)

Personally, I prefer the layout of the RCA RCRP05B better. It is better matched (IMO) to today's PVRs and Blu-Ray players. It also has 1658/1858. ($15 recently at Walgreens, $20 at Best Buy).

Some cable company remotes will work: any Atlas or the Cox 7820B have 1658. So do the high end Vizio TV remotes.

What I said about the 2100 also applies to the RM-AV3000, though you might get a few more commands with it but still not enough to completely control the receiver.

I don't know what the RM-P700E controls but I'm pretty sure you can't control the receiver with it, and definitely not the DAV.

Why not buy one of the remotes which will work, and use it to teach one of the Sony remotes? This strategy is employed by lots of people with very expensive or preferred (but older) remotes.

Unfortunately, I already own the Sony remotes I mentioned. Is the issue that Sony requires ONLY the original remote, or that the Sony remotes I already own arent the correct alternatives.

I am hoping there is some way to make the equiptment I own work with the Sony remotes I own, particularly my Surround System DAV-FX500.

Sony equipment can be controlled by any IR remote that has an appropriate setup (yours don't) or can be taught the correct IR signals (yours can learn.)




Your Sony remotes can learn the necessary signals.  Spend $20 or less on a newer remote that has the needed setup code(s), and use this cheap remote to teach the signals to your Sony remote(s).  Recommended remotes are mentioned in Posts #4 and 5 in this thread. 

Use Setup code Audio 1658 for the DAV, and Audio 1441 (some codes e.g. Surround are on Audio 1558) 

If you don't want to spend the $20, it will take an hour or so, but you can manually enter a 5 digit number for each button into a Comcast remote.  Some other cable company remotes will work also. I can tell you which 5 digit codes to use.

I'm not sure if it was plainly stated in any of the referenced links, but you can either use the key mover procedure to assign the code to the OFA remote and then send the command to your universal remote, or you can send the code directly to the universal remote by putting it in learn mode and then pressing set and the 5 digit code, which will then transmit it to the learning remote.

Either procedure will work, but one or the other might work better for you.
