My rmt-v501 remote is a battery hog. Is this a problem that can be fixed or should I bite the bullet and by new?

How much of a hog? Looking at a photo of that remote, it should last for years between battery changes. It's possible you have a stuck (or intermittantly stuck) button...

Am having same issue - battery lasts about 2 weeks. Used to last a year or more. Have you found a universal remote that works well, or have you found another solution?

Must be a common failure of this remote. I'd suggest getting a learning universal, teaching all of the commands from this one, then putting the original in a drawer for safe keeping.
