Hello all - I jsut bought a RM-AX4000 remote for $119 at Aaxes. It should arrive this week. Do I need to go ahead and down load the software first and set it up or should I wait? I will be using it to control a Sony STR-DA4ES, Sony DVP-NS900v, Samsung 56" DLP and a Motorola DVR cable box.
thank you,

You'l need to wait for your remote before setting up components. I tried the software but each time you want to setup a device it asks for the remote to be hooked up.

Thank uou. That is what I was afraid of. I am assuming you have this model? If so, what are your thoughts?
thank you,

Dear Edwelly,

Here's some advice: This device (at least the one I have) is very cranky about reading other remotes. If it tells you immediately that it can't read the signal, this is good news. For I found that, in that case, simply click on the "Read" button on your PC and wait a second or two (but not the time-out interval of ten seconds) to push and hold the button on the sending remote. If it times out, or says, after a long pause, that the signal is invalid, change the distance between the remotes gradually until it can read it. And if, at first, you don't succeed, try, try again, for I found that for some remotes, each button requires thirty or forty attempts before the RM-AX4000 will read it. Once you get a good distance for a particular remote, and a good pause after hitting the "Read" button, stick with that combination and you might find that there's less trouble with the rest of the buttons for that remote. Also, try to get past the Wizard by programming just one remote. Then, save the results, upload to the RM-AX4000, close the PC application, restart it and go to the Advanced tab. There's a signal repeat length setting which varies from 1 to 15. Try changing that gradually, for that seems to have a strong effect as well as, apparently, the RM-AX4000 has trouble keeping track of when the signal of the sending remote loops back to the start and needs to be told the approximate length of each signal loop iteration, this unlike the GE, Philips and other universal remotes I've owned. Allocate several hours for the training of your RM-AX4000 and your patience and sweat will be rewarded with a device which works well, though you might, like me, curse the lack of thought which went into the programming part of its design.

Regards,
Jeff

edwelly,

I know your post is old but I am thinking of picking up the RM-AX4000 and saw that you had a Motorola DVR cable box. Does it work with your DVR? I have Comcast as a cable provider here in Boston, MA. If it does work, do you have the dual DVR tuner? Does that work? Any info you could pass along would be appreciated. Thanks

Lex,

I currently have the AX4000 and I have the Motorola (Comcast version) Dual Tuner DVR with HD.

When I first tried to setup the remote control, It reconized it as the base version (with out DVR). I had to program the other buttons by hand.

It took a while, but the AX4000 is set up now just how I want it.

Hope that helps.
