Why does it say on the box that this device is "for NTSC"? What's the meaning of that, since I don't understand how the tv-system would make any difference?

I have the chance to buy this from the States but live in Finland, where the tv-system is PAL.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The only thing I can think of is that Sony's (and possibly others) NTSC & PAL equipment use different infared codes, so what's **pre-programmed** will only work with the NTSC versions.

That's great news for PAL users. Perhaps that's all there is - different labels. It does make one think that they're planning a seperate PAL version, but since nothing's been announced it's hard to say.

NTSC and PAL are types of coding they use for products depending on geographical regions. I do believe NTSC is for North America and other nearby regions, and that PAL is for european countries. From what I understand, in order to use products in conjunction with each other, they have to be made in the same geographical region. I own a DVD player, and I know they do that with the movies and the players -- it's a type of copyright. In fact, if you check inside the DVD cases, most have a chart showing the regions.
