Based on a number of great reviews (and noted Tivo compatability) I got a VL900. I'm having a very hard time programming it to control my Tivo though. I can get the up/down left/right buttons and channel up by learning from my peanut shaped tivo remote, but other functions aren't transferring. Sony support has been nearly non-existent. I'm hoping this is the place for some pointers. I'd appreciate any help.

If this is a recent tivo model, the oem peanut remote has been giving learning remotes problems, especially the vl900. Older peanut remotes didn't. See this thread. The remedy is to use the preset code, but since there isn't one in the vl900 you will need another remote to learn from.:(

Pick up cheap UEI made remote like the one-for-all URC-6131, under $20, or the radio shack 15-2142, $13. Use it to teach the VL900. Both of these remotes accept advanced codes, tivo advanced codes are here. If you get the 15-2142, you would need to add two zeroes to the FRONT of each advanced codes in the above link, because it takes 5 digit codes where the URC-6131 takes three.

Thanks for your help edmund, I'll give it a try. This remote has been more trouble than you can imagine. It changed the eeprom on my cheapo Advent television, making it unusable. I hope this will work.

Although I had to buy an extra universal remote to do it, your advice worked flawlessly edmund. Thanks for the tip.
