I just got my RM-AV2000 yesterday. I haven't had the chance to program it yet but I did throw some batteries in it just to see the blue touchscreen light up.

My question is: Should the touchscreen emit a mildly audible high-pitched hum when it lights up?

Thanks.

I don't know if it "should" but mine does, too.

I was a bit perturbed at the sound, myself. But have since learned to tune it out.

The hum is normal. It's the circuitry involved in boosting the voltage from the batteries to run the backlight.

Thanks everyone. I thought I had a bad unit on my hands.

Hum? I own two and neither make any sound. I use Sony batteries if that might explain it.

John: It's when you turn the backlight on. There's a "hum" or "whine" sound.

Humming is caused by a high frequency signal. The technologu behind the backlight works on frequency rather than voltage. The higher the frequency, the brighter the display. In order to achieve that, the device has to convert DC to AC and modulate the desired frequency...and that's how it works...

About the "humming"...well...I have no idea! Mine does it to to a pitch of about 2,500Hz which I think comes the oscillation I mentioned before. It has to be normal..or has it?

By the way, I never noticed it. I should go easy on the volume in my next movie....

Israel is correct concerning the frequency controlling the backlight. I do not have this remote (yet, hehe), but I have a pager that has the same sort of high-intensity blue backlight. It makes the exact same high-pitched hum you are all referring to and is normal. Hope this helps calm some fears. By the way, if anyone is looking to sell theirs, please let me know. Thanks!
