Does the remote allow labeling
the onscreen LCD buttons?

Nope.
Each function (DVD, CD, AMP) has it's own set of specific 'buttons' that are available. However, you must use the labeling on those buttons when teaching the remote stuff that's not built into its programming.
Example:
On my Sony DSS, there is no "EXIT" button, so I programmed the "+10" key on the remote to act as my EXIT.
I have three more weeks to evaluate my remote...I'm still pretty much on the fence, so far.
