What does the oval dish do that the round one doesn't? Is the 2nd LNB for local channels? I need a new SAT and would like to be sure. Please respond in non-tech speak, thanks.

Oval dish can look at two satellites at same time. For hi-definition TV or satellite hi speed internet access.

Dual LNB for two tuners (different rooms or new microsoft UTV receivers). Local programming now available on DirecTV, others; dual LNB not needed to get these. Also consider add-on outdoor antenna which clips on to your dish.

Good luck and have fun. Don't fall off roof !

Also need the Oval for the Nasa Channel and some other PLUS stations that the round dish can't see.

It can actually "see" 3 satellite positions. There is an empty space for a special LNB called the SatC kit. It changes the frequencies for certain transponders and combines the signal with one of the other LNBs. It is only used in North Carolina and a few other places.

The oval dish is also required for HDTV if you ever plan on upgrading to it. You need to run 4 wires + 1 for local if you want to get everything you can. You can also mount the multiplexer outside but I wouldnt' recommend it.

OVAL DISH GIVES YOU 2 SETS OF TRANSPONDERS TO RECEIVE HDTV AND ALSO GIVES YOU SPANISH CHANNELS YOU STILL NEED TERRESTRIAL ANTENNA 1970'S OLD SCHOOL TYPE TO TUNE IN YOUR LOCAL HDTV SIGNALS. CALL YOUR LOCAL BROADCAST PROVIDERS AND ASK THEM HOW FAR AWAY THE ANTENNA'S ARE FROM U THE RANGE I HAVE COME ACROSS IS 75 MILES THE HIGHER YOU GET THE ANTENNA UP THE BETTER OFF YOU ARE. Oval Dish also is needed for reception of "Local Channels". I signed up with Direct TV for my local channels here in San Diego, but couldn't get them. When I called Direct TV Tech Support they told me I needed the Oval Dish in order to receive the local Channels.

Hey Duane,

I think it depends on where you are at in the USA to decide if your local station are on the second sat. In detroit, mine were on the same one so it worked fine before I got the oval dish for HDTV
