Is DirecTV now broadcasting letterboxed material in 16:9 enhanced format?

Has this been announced anywhere? Isn't this an important bridge between HDTV and standard 4:3, i.e. "somewhat" higher resolution of widescreen material?

Is this only a feature of DirecTV or does DISH do the same? Do all DirecTV receivers know how to capture the "expanded" picture, and do all HDTV sets automatically bounce into "compressed" mode to show the higher resolution picture?

Has this been a feature of DirecTV for years and everybody knows about it but me? Is it new and I'm the only one who's noticed?

I have the DTC-100 hooked to a Mits widescreen HDTV, the output is always in HD mode on the MITS, the RCA lets me pick the format I want to display, zoom, or expand. My TV is locked into 16x9 all the time when the HD source is selected.
