I just purchased a RCA Dolby DSS Receiver DRD480RE. It has a digital connection, S-Video, two video, audio component connections and Sat in and Sat out to TV via coax. I connected the S-video to my TV and the RCA digital conn. to the digital 1 connection on my Pioneer VSX-508 rec. I was thinking the s-video from the RCA to the TV could take place of the coax RCA out to the VHF/UAF coax connection on the TV but it doesn't work with out it. I get soud, but not dolby digital. On my pioneer rec. you can switch the digital connection to TV, VCR, CD, or MD. I set it TV. I have the component audio from the TV going to receiver. Anyway the digital connection from the RCA to the Pioneer rec. is not working because I can pull it out and I still get the sound.

I am looking for a way to get the Dolby Digital working from the Sat. to my Audio rec. Any ideas how I should hook all this up. I also have a VCR with only component Video, and a DVD that is connected via digital coax connection and S-video from TV to DVD that working great.
I am very confused :(

OK: You have digital from the satellite going into the receiver's TV input. You also have regular audio from the TV going to the receiver's analog TV input. Do you have a similar setup for the DVD player (analog audio and all)? Have you tried removing the analog audio from TV -> amp to check if the digital will then work?

Greg are you sure you are on a SAT. channel broadcasting in Dolby Digital? There are only 1-3 channels at a time in DD., channel 800 in the day time runs a DD. demo all day .

Dolby digital (audio) will travel down the RCA digital or the optical digital output of a dolby DSS receiver. Regular stereo and dolby prologic surround travel down the Right and Left RCA outputs of the DSS receiver.

Video goes out the S-video or an RCA video jack of the DSS receiver.

Connect one of the Dolby Digital output options from your DSS straight to a digital input of your A/V receiver. Connect the stereo audio outputs of the DSS straight to the stereo audio inputs of the SAME DEVICE of your A/V receiver. You MUST.

Connect the S-video output of the DSS straight to a S-video input on your TV.

Connect the RCA video output of the DSS to either your A/V receiver (and then on to the TV) OR an RCA video input on your TV. This is not necessary, but gives you a chance to compare RCA video against S-video by switching sources on your TV. If you have PIP this is simple to do, and very revealing.

Be sure your A/V receiver knows and is set to expect DIGITAL inputs. My Sony had to be told to. Make sure your A/V receiver is set to the device input your DSS is using.

This is how my system is set up. Works for me.

I've been wondering about this for a while... if the satellite broadcast isn't in DD, will the DSS receiver still send 2-channel audio through the digital connection? Using the nice Burr-brown DAC in my receiver instead of whatever they put in a $99 DSS box has to sound a lot better, especially for the music channels...

Ok, I have my S video from the DSS rec connect to the component Video 1 on my TV. I have also connected component audio video from my DSS rec to my Component video 1 to my TV. I have the digital connection going from my DSS to the Digital connection on A/V rec. I have the audio out on my TV going into the audio in of my AV receiver labeled TV/SAT.

This seems to work fine, but I am not sure I am receiving Dolby Digital or Prologic. I sounds pretty good. How could I test. When I disconnect the audio out from the TV to the Receiver I do not get any sounds.

Greg it sounds like you are still not getting DD. You only need the digital connection from the DSS to the A/V reciever and the S-video to the TV to get DD.(You must make sure on Your guide on the DSS that it list a DD. signal)as of tues. channel 110,520 are the only two and 800 in the day time.Usually when a movie is listed as letterbox it is in Dolby Digital (Example the movie Life is on 109 no DD. and Letter box with DD. on 110) Your A/V reciever should light Dolby Digital or a series af LEDs showing 5 channel Audio and .1 for Subwoofer when it is recieving a true Digital singnal, You can check this with your DVD player.
You can run the rca audio directly to the A/V reciever from the DSS. reciever if you are not going to use the internal speakers in your TV.
What A/V reciever are you using and does it have S-video Switching?

This was a new unit, I purchased it at Circuit City for $330. This was for two receivers, one wich wich supports Dolby Digital. The Dolby rec. was listed at $299 and the secound was $99, if you purchased both it came to 330, this didn't include any installation.

One more note is that channel 520 somtimes only broadcast a TWO channel Digital singnal that will only light two of the LEDs (left and right) and will have to be decoded in your A/V receiver in Pro-Logic mode.

No a DSS receiver will not send regular 2 channel audio through the digital coax or toslink, it would be through the rca jacks and can still be decoded in your A/V receiver in any mode you like Pro-Logic Stereo ect.

Look at your stereo receiver to make sure that you have turned the input on to optical not analog. This may be your problem if you don't have it this way

Well, not to beat a dead horse again but here what I have done, I have S-Video from TV going to DSS Rec. Component audio going from TV to DSS rec. The Sat coax in and Coax out to UHF/VHF on TV. I have Digital from DSS going to Digital output on the A/V Rec. I also have audio going from DSS to A/V rec. audio for the TV/SAT. I have the A/V Digital output set to TV. I have set the DSS to Dolby Digital. On my A/V rec. I can set the signal to analog or Digital. When I am running my DVD it is set to Digital and it works fine. When I am view a movie or preview on the DSS and I change the signal to Digital I do not get any sound. When I set my Receiver to analog I get the sound. I am getting sound on all 5 Speakers and it sounds pretty good. Still not sure if it's Pro logic or Dolby Digital. O'well

Greg you do not need the coax from DSS to TV. You also mention hooking digital to OUTPUT on receiver in two places, it is an INPUT to the A/V receiver. There is usually only one digital output on a A/V receiver for a Mini Disc Player or Digital Audio Tape. What receiver are you using?

If the coax from the DSS to TV is not connect I do not get a signal humm. I thought I would get video from my S-video connection from the DSS to the TV but it does't work with out the connection to the UHF/VHF on the TV. I have a Pioneer VSX-D508, with have two Digital connections.
