Is an OTA (off the air 8VSB modulator) required to receive a local HD signal? What is it exactly? I just got my Dishnetwork set up. The receiver is a model 6000, the guy that I bought it from says that I need have to have the OTA.
If I already subscribe to the $4.99 a month plan to get local channels wont the broadcast be HD when available?
Thanks for your help, Mike

Mike, The guy you bought the system from is correct. The 8VSB module is required to get local HD broadcasts (if they are available in your area). You will also need a UHF (most common) or VHF (some area in Ohio) antenna. The module just converts the OTA digital signal to a format that your TV can understand.
The $4.99 local channel option will get you over compressed digital channels that are not close to HD quality. There is not enough satellite bandwidth to send HD signals from every station that is broadcasting.
