Is it possible to take the front circuit board out of an older Dish receiver that had a IR receiver, and install it into the Dish 4000 to allow the use of an IR Remote Control? Or, is there any programmable remote control that will send a UHF signal to the Dish 4000 without having to make any changes to it? I just learned that it is possible to add IR to the Dish 4000, but I don't have the guts to start soldering parts onto the circuit board.

It's likely possible, but I'm not sure how likely you'd be to find the daughterboard. I'm pretty sure DISH used the same basic parts in all their receivers. The only difference would be what components are soldered into what holes.

It'd be easier to buy the parts and solder them in yourself. I know you said you don't have the guts to do it, but you might surprise yourself. Everything is well labeled, and the clearances aren't too tight. If you've ever done any soldering, then you can do it. I did mine, and I'm no expert or super-electronics hobbyist. Use a low-wattage soldering iron, be stingy with any extra solder you use, and verify your connections with a multitester. I upgraded my 3 year-old model 4000 without a problem (while watching the world series, no less!).

About the UHF remote...I've never heard of anything like a learning UHF remote. I imagine they don't make them because of the possibility of mis-use. Hang-out in a parking lot with your learning UHF remote, pick up a few signals from people arming their car alarms...you get the idea.

Good luck in your quest. I was about to buy a whole new receiver until I found the instructions on how to add the IR.

Chester,

Would you mind letting me know where you found the instructions for the Dish 4000 IR rework. I just picked up a Harman Kardon TC1000 Remote that has replaced everything except my Dish 4000 remote. Now just looking at the Dish UHF remote pisses me off. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the link Chester! I ordered the parts from DigiKey.com last night--Grand Total: $13.69 including shipping. Gotta love it!

Chester,
I tried the upgrade the web site was talking about. Problem I have is it didn't work. I tried the Radio Shack IR device. Which one did you use for the IR device? I have all the parts in but no go yet. Thanks for any information.

Brad,
I used the Sharp GP1U27X factory spec component. I bought it from one of the other readers of this board who had to buy 10 of 'em at once - I don't know what his source was (BTW, I got his last one, sorry). You might be able to round up a few people who want to go in together so you're not stuck with leftovers.

The Sharp GP1U27X fit perfectly. When you look at the PC board, you'll see a couple of tiny rectangles - these fit tiny flanges on the IR receiver.

I can't comment on the Radio Shack part...but as the website says: "The IR receiver that Radio Shack sells is not 100% reliable in this application. It may or may not work for you; most people report poor range. "

Good luck.
