I heard through my stereo installation guy that they are going to local stations on satelite now how far away is that concept?

The House passed the legislation (again!) on 11-18-99. The Senate is expected to pass it today or Monday. Clinton has stated he will sign the bill when it is presented........look for it soon.

Does this mean ALL local channels will be broadcast over the satellite, or just the major markets? I would love to get my locals (South Bend, IN) through the dish so I can ditch my basic cable suscription!

what it means is that they will start broadcasting in the top twenty markets within the next couple of weeks. If you are in any other market you will need to get the new dish with the multiple LNB' and a new receiver.

oh and you will also need to run six (6) lines of coax from the dish to a new multi-switch ( that isn't out yet. stay tuned.

You DO NOT need a new dish and/or receiver!!! I just called my local DSS provider to ask. The above information is incorrect.

You will get the "local" channels in your area for an additional monthly fee. Same equipment as before. Remember, we all had the 3 networks before without any equipment changes? Your local TV station(s) will have the option (and why wouldn't they) to "feed" the sattellite their signal.

That's what I was told by the manager of GoldenSky Systems (DirecTV).

If you guys would REALLY do your homework you would find that I'm entirely correct. If your in the top 20 markets you will be ok. if your not in the top twenty makets Direct TV is going to share satelite space with Dish network. irect Tv will be in on transponders 23,25,27,29,& 31. This will require the new dish and a new receier.

Hmmm, competition "sharing" the same sattelite? I can change the transponder setting on my current equipment! Why would you need a new dish? Yes, I understand the need for a new one for HDTV, but not for the additional network channels. HDTV & "regular" TV will co-exist for a few more years. Therefore, you do NOT need to throw out your current equipment!

As much as it bothers me, I believe Wayne is right. Here is a link straight from Directv [Link: directtv.com] It sucks for me since I live in Las Vegas.

Well, I just read the above mentioned posting from Directv and I'm a bit confused. Someone care to help sort the information? I have to say that I could care less about the "local" abilities. Am 35 miles from Boston, using antenna to receive those signals. Watch the local news mostly in the kitchen. I wouldn't mind watching the networks signals from New York or Los Angeles, we pretty much do that allready with the DBS signals. So my questions are these:

1, Is this going to cost us more?
2, Is the 18" round antenna sufficent for network
signals.
3, Will we have a choice? (local or network)

since I seem to be the bearer of bad news heres more. No more out of market channels i.e east and west coast feeds to the same household
