Anyone else getting rebooting of receiver on channel 9 CFTO HD, keeps trying to update my receiver's channel line-up, then picture, then back to line-up, over and over.

This started on Thursday March 3, 2011, all other channels are fine.

This is annoying, to exit, I have to shut of receiver (standalone unit HD unit) and all channels then lost, have to rescan.

They are well known for having issues with their PSIP info I have heard, maybe that is what is happening to you.

Its a funny thing though, if the PSIP info is corrupt, my receiver still can scan in CFTO on rf 40 and display as 9-1 but just keeps cycling when I actually go to the channel to watch.

I'll by-pass HD CFTO for now and watch the analog feed.

Try to contact CFTO and see what they say. Give them your equipment model , hopefully they know the answer, maybe someone with the same equipment already asked them. Maybe there is a firmware update for your "standalone unit" (actual make/model would have been more helpful, oh privacy!, lol) that will address how to handle this scenarios, try contacting the manufacturer. I know at least 6 different units that are working fine with CFTO HD.

Just checked my model literature and tried to find an answer, nothing in there.

Not a privacy issue, its a fully stand-alone unit:

Model ZAT-500HD, with every option available on it, mulitple inputs, resolution setup and on screen functions and TV guide.

I'll try to contact CFTO, long time ago when I worked for Bell, I interface with them through the CN Tower Broadcasters committee and a Mr Edgely was their rep.

Its being 5 days since last March the 3rd when you say it started happening and I do not find other people having the same issue on several canadian forums. I checked zinwell website and there is a way to update the firmware using the RS-232 COM port but could not find a firmware update at all for your model.

You also mentioned that to "fix" the problem you have to power down the ATSC unit but then you loose the channels so you have to scan them in again. Was that happening before? , Is it normal for your ATSC tuner to loose its memory if you power down completly? I would imagine it would have some sort of memory to keep that info in case of power loss. At least my tuners do keep the info.

Back in late 2006 when the OMNI's went online there was an issue with those 3 stations (CFTO included) related to all of them using the same value (default by factory to 1) on their TSID instead of the value assigned by CRTC/FCC or maybe Industry Canada. Therefore lots of tuners (mostly Samsung made I think) could not map those stations accordingly resulting in only 1 station being mapped at a time. I do not think now the problem is related to the broadcasters but rather your own equipment since nooneelse seems to complain about it.

Hopefully another user with the same ATSC tuner model can chime in and help you further.

Thanks for the reply but:

1) the tuner does retain station memory when powered down or ac interrupt:
2) never happened before and started on CFTO CTV last Thursday:
3) the rx does remap if PSIP changes from program to program e.g. CFTO feed of Canadian show, then USA show follows:
4) All other stations over 20 HD are OK
5) The rx goes into full reboot, display goes to "000" and goes to first time installed screen to scan channels

Sent e-mail to CFTO, quite sure they have changed a setting on the feeds and/or PSIP. My rx might just be a little more sensitive to this. No software update available for my receiver from Zinwell, no response from them as of yet and my e-mail.

However, others are noticing PSIP problem on CFTO too with mapping from 40-1 to 9-1 and back to 40-1. Maybe they are testing for switch in August?

For the first time in 4 years I am having problem with with CFTO 9-1(40-1).
Signal strength is OK but no video or audio. All other channels are OK.
I rescanned and reset the receiver. Also tried 40-4 as was suggested on the forum.
Model is Toshiba 37HL95 and it has identical history with 41-1 and 11-1, when these channels have been launched. Problems has been resolved then by firmware update.
I suspect the fault is on both ends: Cfto and TV's minor incompatibility in encoding and decoding of the PSIP data. I wish that format should be more robust and immune to data entry error.

No doubt your receiver is more sensitive to whatever has changed with CFTO HD. I remember back then in 2006 the Win XP PC based users that were using MCE were the most affected (similar issue between CFTO and WIVB I think , TSID related) but I cant find exactly what the issue with the MCE software was since the users on avsforum isolated the problem to MCE software and realized it was not dependant on tuner hardware or other softwares.

Interesting to see the outcome on this one and what CFTO might have to say. Too bad I lack the hardware/software needed to analize de PSIP data any further. It would have been interesting.

I have not received a reply from CFTO yet, so I resend another message with additional information.

I tried again last night total receiver reboot (factory reset) rescanned all channels and the same problem still on CFTO channel 9 (rf 40). Flipping between error code and video but no audio on the short video display. All other channels work perfectly.

I think the least CFTO could do is respond with an e-mail but off air users are not worth it?

May have to block channel 9 on my receiver and see if I can get the shows on other channels from Buffalo. No more news at 6 or 11 from them. Its CBC, Global or CITY for me!

OTA users are not worthy, is a sad reallity specially in a "free democratic country" where the elected officials are supposed to work hard on the taxpayer behalf and for their benefits. To make it even worst and unacceptable CFTO like any other OTA TV or Radio station has 1 and only reason to exist and that is to fulfill its license requirements first and foremost by servicing its OTA audience with good quality programming. After all it is our spectrum, well your spectrum because I am not a Canadian Citizen, therefore it should serve us first and foremost, no questions asked, no doubt about it either, but in a society where the dollar rules policies like this are impossible to implement.

Good thing (for them) I am not the regulator , because in my books , most of this stations would have lost their license long time ago or would have finally had to comply to finally serve its audience once again. Think about it, the introduction of the BDU's pretty much like the introduction of competing phone services has not reverted in benefits to the citizens , service plans cost as much as before, fees the same , service quality the same or worst. Basic phone service still costs as much as 10 years ago or even more now and I still remember they promised that phone liberalisation would lower phone rates. Maybe in another country! but certainly not here.

There are ongoing hearings here in Toronto about OTA and its future, I would encourage everyone to get involved somehow, after all you have that freedom, otherwise the future will be just a few OTA stations in just a few major cities throughout the country . At this rate, even Cuba, would have more national TV Stations (6 plus 14 province-wide) and transmitters serving its population nationwide, unfortunalley with communist-only bias approach but at least it reaches almost all its population. And they dont have the money but again in their benefit they started TV services in Cuba 5 years earlier than in Canada just 2 years behind NBC in USA.

In regards of the OP topic, HDGeorge hit the nail when saying both ends are at fault but in any case it is the broadcaster ultimate responsibility to properly configure its services so it reaches and serves its audience properly.

One of the annoyances of my HD receiver is that it NEVER refreshes PSIP information. So if something major is changed, or a new subchannel added, it doesn't know about it. On the plus side, as long as the *base* signal structure is the same, it continues to work even if they mess up something minor.

Based on old PSIP I'm still getting sound and picture, but tonight I'm getting pretty horrible reception - no more than 69% and it's constantly breaking up and disappearing. I'll try again tomorrow.
