Hi Again to Everyone (including the annoying lady who likes to complain)
We closed our retail store on St. Clair - we will open another one again soon hopefully.
In the meantime we are still installing a few antennas every week - we have now been operating for over 3 years and we have hundreds and hundreds of satisfied customers. We install almost exclusively Antennas Direct Products - especially the Clearstream 2-V all over Toronto. It has a VHF element, which helps with CTV - channel 9 and CHCH - channel 11.
We now have offices in Toronto, London and Sarnia and we install basically anywhere in Southern Ontario from Scarborough to Windsor - Markham to Hamilton. It takes about 2-3 hours for installation in most cases and costs around $500 including antenna, parts and installation.
While we usually decry posts by blatantly commercial interests, I applaud your approach and your openness. Please keep involved in remotecentral by answering questions that don't necessarily point people toward your front door; then you'll be a GREAT member here, as we're all here to share and help.

Yeah, I would, too! I imagine that it's not the simplest sort of arrangement, carrying a ten foot mast or two on the bus. Or the train. Or even, say, one or more UHF + upper band VHF antennas, where the boxes are at least three feet long.
I also got tired of missing out on the business from those people who wanted to install their own antenna.
Well, now, there's a real good point. You save those people the hassle of taking masts on the train, too!

Be very careful using this company. They would not deal with any of the issues I had regarding their installation, promised me 22-30 channels and got 10. Finally had to hire someone else to come and correct their installation. The most telling part was they had installed my antenna with no ground wire.
I had contacted them about my install. I emailed them a question about insurance and never got a response. I really wish them luck in their business but if they want to be pros, operate like pros. If you are going up on people's roofs, people need to be confident they won't be sued if the installer falls off the roof and ends up in a wheelchair for the rest of their life.

I'm really curious to see how this store does. Of course, I wish them luck and every success. But now they need cash flow to pay the rent and labour to man their store 7 days per week. They are trying to make a living over what many of us do as a hobby.
What will the market bear for a new OTA installation? I'd imagine it would be a multiple of the clients monthly cable or satellite bill? As another lister pointed out, what is the minimum professional antenna installation required for liability purposes... providing a path to ground might be one such thing... and what that adds to the cost. Being absolutely clear about HDTV expectations is another issue so there are no unfounded expectations.
The owner Geoff is not a pro. You will find that if you ask him a question he doesn't want to answer he just doesn't. I don't belive he has insurance, I know when I contacted WSIB he hasn't been making his payments, this information is free and open to anyone who calls WSIB. I spoke to him two weeks ago about my shoddy installation, and all I got for my trouble is being yelled at. Told me I didn't get all the channels he promised because of the weather (huh). The weather has been the same since the other installer came and yet I get 26 channels. He also told me that his installer has entered rehab two days after doing my installation, and I asked him in that case he should have taken my complaints a little more seriously. I wouldn't bother with him, save your time and aggravation and deal with someone else. I went with V & E Antenna in Pickering and he was very professional (and no he is not paying me to say this). He seriously put my house and the one's at either side of me in jeopardy, if it wasnt' so expensive I would take him to court. I have lived in this house for thirty years and I have never been treated so badly by any company before, being yelled at, being blamed for everything (oh yes, everything is my fault), and being hung up on. Take your money and business to someone who deserves it.
Well they are literally 2 minutes from me walking, I'd have liked to ask them what I can do now the my Rabbit Ears met a forced retirement, but many times they are closed. I've owned a store so I understand that keeping longer hours is not always a profitable thing and as I owned a computer store people always wanted free advice after buying stuff else where it gets really old, quickly especially cause they don't want to pay for service, I 'd imagine its the same in his business. As I now have NO Antenna signal thanks to DTV, I will go in and talk to them and keep an open mind IF I find them open !!
With all due respect and. expenting this does not sound harsh in anyway, your loss of signal has more to do with the fact that you did not follow the PSA's advices or in other words did nothing about it rather than with the DTV switch over. Granted that maybe there were maybe not enough PSA's, or maybe they started too late so close to dateline, or maybe not enough during prime time but ultimately you and others (and beleive me I have talked to people recently who though their bedroom tv broke and were going to get rid of it) should have somehow ate least done something about it before the dateline.
In any case and, while Welcoming to the Forum where you and others will always find answer to your questions, I will gladly help you further if needed. I am looking to have someone install an antenna at my home in Mississauga, so far, I have contacted 3 companies, The Antenna Guys, Toronto HD Antenna Installers and Dr, Antenna. Has anyone heard of these companies? If so, can anyone please tell me if they are any good? A couple of them sound good, Dr. Antenna offered a two year guarantee to cover any installation issues but the guy said he would use my existing cable connected to my TVs, however, I read in a form that a cable run should not be longer than 50 feet otherwise you will get signal issues or something along those lines. The same guy says he has a strong antenna that streams both UHF and VHF, the other guy says he prefers to use the DigiWave antenna as it does a good job pulling in channels, either way the antenna will be installed on my existing tower which with a mast will sit higher than my roof top. Any advise or recommendations would be greatly appreciated or if you know someone that you trust will do a good job, and they work within the GTA, please let me know?
Make sure to do your due diligence and read how this company responds on the internet to anyone making complaints. they will treat you exactly the same as a customer.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH "THE ANTENNA GUYS" or Geoff Tebbutt (owner/installer) under any conditions. RUN, Fast and Far away from these guys. I did business with them based on a referral and all I can say is W-O-W.. just WOW.
1. Try calling any of their http://www.theantennaguys.com/ contact numbers. I dare you. You will soon find out that all the numbers listed are rarely answered and are usually directed to a personal voicemail. The best part? The outgoing voicemail message. The owner states that he is terrible at returning calls and not to bother leaving a voicemail (email only!)!!!!! Ummmm WHAT????? Well at least he's honest. They rarely return your calls. You will spend a ridiculous amount of time searching for them like the police on the hunt for an escaped convict.
2. No Show - No call - No service - No explanation. They will call and leave a message about the date when they are supposed to arrive to install, but they will not provide any time (or time range). You will take time off work and wait for them like a loser and no one will show. This will happen several times over (3 times in my case). When you finally get a response after calling multiple times (via email of course) they will not offer an apology, just a new date. Guess what? They won't show yet again.
3. Excuses. Excuses. Excuses. DO NOT PAY IN FULL. They will drop you like a hot sack of shi* after payment. Why bother with customer service once you have the money right (note: I paid in full prior to the install date)?
You will hear every excuse for non-installation. Make sure you get everything in writing. You will need it for the Better Business Bureau submission or small claims court. It defies explanation how people in customer service can tell you over the phone that they will call you back, or show up for a scheduled service, and just ignore you for days on end until YOU follow up. Even if you are upset beyond upset ... and make that clear.. you will not get an appropriate response.
4. Good luck to anyone foolish enough to do business with these guys
