Hi guys... I'm in Queenston, Ontario (on top of the Escarpment, thankfully!), and am just setting up my HDTV. So far, so good, and I've got a decent outdoor antenna set up. However, there are a couple of stations that are on the weak side (notably WPXJ/ION out of Buffalo on 23-1). I have seen some people report good luck with signal booster/amplifers, and I would like to get some recommendations.

Whatever advice you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Rex

I've been pretty happy with Channel Master preamps.

However I think we need a bit more info on your antenna setup.

WPXJ is actually broadcasting out of Batavia and not Buffalo. Their signal is mostly aimed in an east-west pattern so it might be hard for you to receive their signal consistently. However, you can try aiming your antenna a bit more east to see if it comes in. Also, a good preamp such as the Channel Master 7777 will improve your chances substantially to receive this station.

I agree wil DrSat. WPXJ is nearly impossible to get. It is for me in St. Catharines, and I've got a 13 foot (boom) antenna 35 feet in the air. In fact, I'd consider channel 51 not watchable here. When I do get it, I'm turning my antenna almost due east for the 'most bars' on the signal meter

I am using a CATV drop amplifier with my antenna and they are great. I've used the Permacolor amp/preamp--similar to the 7777 and have had good results with that too.

I never install an antenna without an amp.

If you're up on the escarpment, you might have better chances at getting WPXJ.

BTW: Is anyone keeping track of WNYO's request to change their 'directional' signal to a more reliable one?

The channnel master 7777 are good preamps , however the preamp is only as good as your antenna. Also if your using a uhf only antenna then you really dont need a 7777 . A better choice would be the winegard ap-4800 uhf only with almost 30 db gain. A single banded preamp will always perform better than a dual. I have customers in Rew PA. with a yagi and a winegard ap-4800 pulling the buff stuff at 75%

AP-4800 eh? That's good info...

What is the make/model of the Rew yagi?
