Looking for HD TV tuner for off the air signals to digital projector.
Need advice on tuners in DVD recorders (which down scale signal) VS "stand alone" tuners that would pass a "pure" HD signal to projector.
In both cases digital audio will go to existing AV receiver.
How much image quality is lost in the down scale/up scale process with tuners in DVD recorders??? Is enough quality lost to justify a stand alone tuner???
Thanks

Look at www.dtvpal.com which has HD off air tuner with DVR built in for $249
No job to small, many to big

If the lost was not enough then people would not buy Blu-Ray and instead kept using their old DVD with the new HDTV (although in your case the source was originally HD).

I second the poster that recommended the DTV pal that has the PVR capability since it also includes a nice TVGOS service unless you already have an HDTV capable PVR-Ready DVB Satellite Receiver (now preferable with DVB-S2 capability) that most people call FTA receiver. They also work very well and have the added convenience of getting some Satellite TV although for now the only HD channel is PBS HD on the Ku Band. C-band has the erst of the US networks.

Yes, projector is HD ready: A Dell 3300MP does 1080i and 720p
I can't help but think there are many projector owners out there that don't want expensive (and compressed) cable/satelite signals for their HD projectors.
All suggestions appreciated.

I just checked on the "dtvpal" which is a converter, and puts out an analog signal. I want something that will pass on the digital signal to the projector.

Check the site again. The DTVPal DVR has an HDMI output.

I think there are 3 versions including the regular you saw and the one recommended by the previous poster. It seems to be indeed a nice machine but I have not got my hands on it for a full review, not yet.

Most people unfortunaelly do not even know how bad cable/satellite HD could be compared with the OTA signal. Well some OTA signals are also overcompressed, it depends on the broadcaster. Heck I have even seen people renting an HD STB and yet their TV is still a SD TV.

You are correct, I missed that. Unfortunately, they are sold out at the moment.
Will appreciate ideas on other HD tuners that put out a "pure" digital signal via DVI or HDMI. I'm not very concerned about recording capability, would buy a unit without that feature.
Thanks for the tip. D in D

I've got a Samsung DTB-H260F which has HDMI, Component, Optical, and your standard RCA outputs ... got it at CC back when they were still around.

It's got a few quirks: the output resolution is only selectable from a rear-panel switch; same with selecting HDMI or Component... I've been really happy with mine, though.

Thank you PeterN
I will appreciate all war stories on "stand alone" tuners. I prefer that they not have DVR/DVD recorder, and must not downscale HD signal like those recorder units do. DenverDick

DenverDick here again, after a long absence from town.
Still looking for a stand alone HD TV tuner to route to projector via component video. All suggestions appreciated.
