Hi folks. I built one of these too using a 2x4, 12 gauge copper romex, and 6 wood screws and washers. I did not build a reflector. I live on Grand Island (in the middle of Island) and have a pretty clear view of the NNW area and aiming the antenna toward TMA was able to pull (in HD) all my locals plus 5.1 and 36.1... The antenna at present is unamplified. When I find a 7777 I'll post more results. FYI: The reception of the Canadian analog stations (9,11,41,47, etc) was better than decent and I was initially surprised that I did not have to aim the thing "perfect"... more after I find an amp & test again.. .

Hi, Im 300ohm who designed the NAROD (the VHF-HI/UHF) version of the Gray-Hoverman antenna. (I also have a fractal uhf version posted in the forum too, because a lot seem to be fractal obsessed, heh) I found this thread amusing, so I have to jump in, heh.

I only did that because I knew I'd someday confuse hd fan, heh.

The reason is actually that most TV antennas use a folded half wave dipole instead of a half wave dipole

The reason Ive read that they used 300ohm impedance is that back in the old days, 300 ohm twin-lead was the size they could comfortably and cheaply manufacture. (there seemed to have been a big clamor for the use of 600 ohm line back then) Consequently all TV antennas were designed to use 300 ohm twin-lead for a good impedance match. Even now, all the commonly available cable and baluns are set for that standard. If designing for 75 ohms, a 1 : 1 balun would be needed anyway, saving nothing. With the NEC2 computer modeling engine I use, you input the desired impedance rather than relying on the intrinsic impedance of the antenna itself. The mismatch shows up as VSWR, which you then tweak the design to have the lowest possible figure. (The NET gain figures take that into account. If NET gain is not posted, assume RAW gain.)

Could you give us more details in regards of the performance of this antenna in the High section of the VHF Band (Band III, Ch 7 to 13).

The NEC files are also posted, so that any antenna modeler can look at them, copy and paste it into a NEC modeling program and improve upon it if he so chooses. The excellent and totally  free 4nec2 program can be downloaded from Arie Voors website at  [Link: home.ict.nl]
The NEC2 engine that it uses was developed by Lawrence Livermore Labs for use by the U.S. Navy on a Cray 1 supercomputer. The program was extensively used and tested by them for about 2 decades before being released to the general public domain in the 1990's. With PC's being so many times more powerful now, the program really comes to life.

Well, why are a lot of the "new and improved" antenna models coming out, worse than the ones they will replace and cost more ?  Go figure. The "new" Coke maybe ?

Wood is not a good thing to lay antenna elements on. Plastic is much better and even with plastic, you want to have minimum contact with the driven elements. And avoid having the washers intrude into the feedgap space, that in effect narrows the feedgap spacing.

Being located under 50 miles (LOS) from the transmission tower I'm aiming at really does not affect the antenna's performance. However, the next antenna I plan to build will utilize the build methods you recommend. Happy DX'ing.. . Bill

By this definition, your grandmother, and most women, are elitist snobs. The most moral and upright man I ever knew would lamely point me at a screwdriver when there was a mechanical problem because he had zero mechanical skills. His wife thought he gave away too much money to charity and he was on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries. To you he is an elitist because he WON'T get his hands dirty. You condemn him for lack of skill that you assume everyone has. You are wrong --there are a huge number of people who simply don't have the skills even to build an antenna as simple as this.

You're also confusing "elitist" with "someone who likes to keep their hands clean." A reasonable definition for elitism is
The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.

The issue here is superiority. Your superiority. You believe that the people who are willing to get their hands dirty, and who have superior mechanical skills, should have this antenna, and those who would have to go buy it should not have it. At least they cannot go buy it, and I believe you touted this as an advantage of it. I don't mean to overuse grandmothers here, but since my grandmother can't go buy your antenna, your elitism is keeping it out of her hands.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I saw the site and your plan for a rounded GH. It got me thinking, what if you flatten it out a bit (\_v_/ with a 120o angle between two slanted reflectors (in black) and the flat one) and used three together so that the back reflectors form an equilateral triangle? i.e. something like

Im not quite sure I follow. A mesh reflector in back of a mesh reflector ? In that case, you would be purposely inducing multipath to the driven element. (but very little of it would get thru the first 2 X 4 mesh reflector at uhf/vhf frequencies anyway)

A mesh reflector in back of a mesh reflector ?

not exactly, I was wondering what would happen if you had three GH antennas back to back to back, each of the three reflectors had their own drive element just pointed in a different direction (i.e. 120o from the other)

Using your NEC file for the circular GH, this is kind of what I thought (but the final build of the reflector being a lot simpler and more like the diagram I showed) . The issue is that when I tried running this model, the program crashed (could have a few things that are wrong with it since I have no experience with this stuff). If you look at it from above, I think you would understand what I mean, so here is the NEC
