I just bought a Samsung dvd/tuner combo (the htx40), and cannot seem to get the stock Dish Network remote to program to control the volume on the receiver. Bummer. I called tech support, and they gave me a couple of codes that might work, but they didn't. According tech support, these "combo" machines don't work well with the Dish remote. Any advice on getting this thing to work? Also, I am open to purchasing a new universal remote, if I can be sure it will work. Any advice out there?

You've tried all of these?

738, 755, 651, 652, 667, 668, 691, 740, 741

For once dish tech support is leading you in the right direction...those combo deals are never easy to integrate with.

Wow. I am new to the site, and am very pleased and impressed with such a quick reply. Thanks for your help Tweeterguy. Unfortunately, those codes didn't take, either. I guess I'll have to start investigating the universal remote route. I wonder which ones work well with Dish DVR's... I think I'll start another thread on that one. In the meantime, if any other suggestions are out there, I'm all ears!

I also just discovered the programming code section of the forum. It would have been more appropriate for me to list this topic there. Sorry for being such a newbie!

Actually no, that is not the correct place. The Discrete Code Hunter is for advanced discrete IR codes for advanced, computer programmable universal remotes. The Other Remote Controls Forum would probalby be more appropriate.

A general note:
combo units are always a mess when it comes to remote control. It used to be impossible, or at least impossible to figure out, to control a TV/VCR combo. They all used VCR codes, which have no volume commands.

I have a client with a Yamaha combo DVD/surround amp combined with a TV with a media box. What a circus that is!

When I was in sales, people were always concerned about buying a combo because they thought two units in one would fail twice as much as singles. I've seen zero evidence of that, but if you're going to buy a combo, don't even THINK of using another remote unless you want to become proficient with arcane remote control problems.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I don't know if this will help, but I worked for Dish and I think you can try this:
Enter in the program mode at the Dish remote (press and hold the button for the device you want program) then press de power button (you'll see the device light on at the remote) then instead of put codes, just press and release the up arrow (Ch up) and keep doing that until the device turn off (have the device on before start the program mode). Then press the # key. That works to program TVs, VCRs and DVDs. I hope this help you guys.
