Inconsistency and failings of DIRECT TV remote hand unit MODEL RC 16.

Keep in mind the intention of this remote is to turn the TV and DTV receiver on and off with one button.
1. Panasonic 32” TV in Den = To turn on must move switch to TV and press “PWR” twice. Move switch back to Satellite and press “PWR” again for DTV Receiver. To turn off you must move the switch to “TV” position and press “PWR” then move the switch back to Satellite position and press “PWR” again.

2. Magnavox 21” TV in Kitchen = To turn on must move switch to TV position and press three times (not two or one). Return switch to Satellite and press either “PWR” or “TV POWER ON” button. To turn both items off merely press “TV POWER OFF” button only once.

3. JVC 27” TV in Bedroom is unique = Press “TV POWER ON” button once to turn on both the TV and the Satellite. Press the “TV POWER OFF” button to turn off both units. I BELIEVE THIS IS HOW THE SYSTEM WAS SUPPOSED TO WORK BUT DOES NOT for all TVs.

4. RCA 27” TV in Bedroom = To turn on must move switch to TV and press “PWR” twice. Move switch back to Satellite and press “PWR” again for DTV Receiver. To turn off you must move the switch to “TV” position and press “PWR” then move the switch back to Satellite position and press “PWR” again.

5. RCA 19” TV (25 Years old) in bedroom = This TV will not be turned on by DTV remote because the codes do not exist as I am told by DTV Tech Support. Turning on the DTV box is easy with any power button. The TV must use a separate independent remote.

SUMMING UP: This Remote R16 hand unit is an awful design with inconsistencies and failures throughout. Other buttons have no function and do not operate, such as “TV Input” and “Active”. Press the guide twice to see time schedule and guide hangs up to not let you go back to previous screens.

IN ALL THIS REMOTE (RC 16, URC 1081BG0-0) SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN LET OUT OF THE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. I IS A SAD COMMENTARY ON MODERN TECHNOLOGY. I HOPE DTV WILL IMMEDIATLEY TREAT THIS ITEM AS NEEDING TO BE RECALLED AND DONE IMMEDIATELY. I HOPE AND LOOK FORWARD TO RECEIVING REPLACEMENT REMOTES OF DIFFERENT MODELS FOR THE FIVE THAT I HAVE.

It isn't failures on the part of the remote, those Tv codes were just not programmed to punch-though to the DTV device. take your complaints up with manufacturer, UEI.

Just for a moment, let's put aside all of the TRUE things you have said, and the stupidity of how that remote works. Does it make any sense AT ALL to set up a custom channel list (as I have done because I have no interested in QVC or several other channels), select that as the active guide, then
hit GUIDE to see the guide
THEN have to choose "All Channels in Custom 1"

? ? ?

It is dumb that EVERY friggin time you want to see the guide, you have to hit the button twice. What, DirecTV did a survey and found that everybody wants to change the filter on the guide EVERY time they look at the guide?

And if I wanted to filter it EVERY time to,say, Kids Channels, which is the fifth category, wouldn't I want to be able to just set it there and not have to scroll down and punch that category every time? It requires seven button pushes to get to the kid channel list and the stupid receiver makes you have to do that every time!

It's more than the remote. It's the whole damn receiver!

Edmund, if he takes it up with UEI, he will be talking about failures with the remote...programming. Not having separate ON and OFF buttons (clunky old RCA has had these for ten years). Having to hit power multiple times. That is indeed a failure of the remote, not in that it is not working right, but in that it should not exist that way at all.

Doesn't DirecTV have to accept and buy the remote for it to come with the receivers? Why didn't DirecTV test this remote enough to see its shortcomings?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Sorry but I agree (in general) with Edmund, I don't see what most (or all) of these issues have to do with the remote itself. The remote is no different (and suffers from the same issues) as most "basic" so-called universal remotes. The "TV Power On" and "TV power off" buttons can only work with tvs that have discrete (separate) power on and power off codes. Most of them don't. So you have to switch power on/off using a separate button for the TV. But I must admit I don't see why it takes more than one press of the power button to switch the TV on. I experimented with the RC16 with my three tv sets (Panasonic, RCA and Sony), none of which have discrete on/off codes. All of them needed the controller set to "TV" before they would switch on and off - just as I expected. But they did it with just one button push, after I found the correct code.
The "TV input" works fine with my tvs - it changes the input from antenna to video1 etc. And the "Active" button is reserved for some future use, it says so in my manual.
For most TV manufacturers there are multiple codes listed. I did have to try more than one of the codes before I found a code that would work all the functions (volume, power, input select).

The complaints about the guide also have nothing to do with the remote. The new DirecTV receivers have come under fire because of their very poor (to many people) user interface and very buggy software. I hate it too, but it is not as bad as it is painted in your post. If you set up a custom channel list as the active guide, two pushes will get you there. And if you select a filtered version as the currently active guide (say kids channels) then it's still only two pushes, you don't have to scroll down to it after the first time. Yes it should only be one push, and DirecTV have apparently said a new guide is being worked on. I hope it will be available soon. DirecTV certainly released the new receivers without much (any?) user testing.

The Sony, using code 10000, and the RCA, using code 10047, do punch-through the ON & OFF commands.

The only problem with the RCA is the discrete ON command resets the tv to the Tuner, from whichever INPUT it may have been previously set to.

To get the INPUT key to work, try the following:

1. Tv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9-6-0

You must understand that I just came from Comcast Cable using a URC 1057BG1 remote hand unit that was fully capable of turning on and off up to three devices including all of TVs mentioned above. There was never a problem addressing on/off peculiarities or special codes. It just worked well. ONE BUTTON for both on and off the cable box plus any of the TVs mentioned above plus my audio amplifiers. I believe the URC 1057 was made by the same company as the RC16.

The Technology is available it just was not used on the RC16. All of you Nay Sayers need to re-examine the needed progress in the industry, and the remote control department is not it.

Not one person here can, or should, defend DTV for what they have produced. This is all wrong and they need to correct it. The millions of dollars needed to fix this will undoubtedly stand in the way. I made this post to "vent" my frustration.

i have direct tv RC23 --
It worked for about a week-- now it will "usually" turn the TV off by clicking the TV power button (upper right). Occasionally this will take more than one try....
MOST OF THE TIME, it will NOT turn the TV back on-- unless the mode button on top is changed from Direct TV to TV. (slider button on the top of the remote)
I have re-set the Box. I have also reset the codes for the remote and i have replaced the batteries. I have TWO of these remotes and neither one of them works any longer? (both of them DID work when i first got the Box (a Direct TV R15)
Just spoke to Direct TV and they are going to send a technician to REPLACE the R15 box?
