I saw the following comment about the Dish Player-DVR 942 I liked its features but see it is not compatible with MPEG 4. Does this mean it will be useless as a receiver when Dish goes to MPEG4?

"The bad: Not compatible with forthcoming MPEG-4 satellite broadcasts; no S-Video output; interface still not as polished as TiVo's; defaults to All Episodes for guide-initiated recordings; no jumpback during scans; somewhat noisy hard drive. "

Stick with DirectV. That's my advice. Echostar is a bad joke.

Though the 942 is an MPEG2 receiver and can not be used on the new MPEG4 satellites, it will be useful for as long as Dish Network uses the current MPEG2 satellites. This will be at least a few years and by the time that Dish Network wants to convert to MPEG4 exclusively Dish will probly upgrade you at little or no cost.

This is what DirecTV is doing for their customers.

Hope this helps,

davet2020,

Do you know how far in the future before Dish brings MPEG4 on line?

AnthonyZ,

The better half wants the advantage of Serious and I was looking to catch some VOOM reruns. I know Direct has XM but she happens to like the Serious line up.

To ALL,
What is stopping ATSC OTA from upgrading to MPEG4?

The new Dish Network MPEG4 satellite, Echostar X, that was scheduled for February 8 has been delayed. They are working on a technical issue.

Once the satellite is in orbit it will be roughly 4-6 months before the MPEG 4 rollout for Dish Network.

Hope this helps,

I see the VIP 622 DVR which dish is now selling and shown in following URL:

does everything that the Dish Player-DVR 942 did.
Plus it is MPEG4 capable when Dish gets around to implementing MPEG4.
