My apologies if this question has been answered many times over. I did some searching but am short on time. My customer has jumped to 9 receivers on their Directv system. They currently have a Terk 5 X 8 multiswitch. I need a spot for the ninth receiver.

She has a triple LNB dish (of course)

All the multiswitches I find that have more than 8 outputs, cost a boatload of money.

Anyone have any suggestions for something less expensive?

OR

Can I place DC power passing splitters on all four of the lines coming down from the dish, and then run two 5x8 switches or two 4x8 switches?

Thanks.

Yes.

Get the 950-2150 splitters (4 of them) and add another multiwitch, make sure you have each of the same sat/polarizations hooked up on the two switches ( to each splitter, so you have an 13v sat a split, 18v sat a split, 13v sat b split, and 18v sat b split). Total retail cost with terk parts is about $110

Or add another 5x8 switch. Take four outputs of the first switch and feed them to the four satellite inputs of the second switch. This gives you four usable outputs on the first switch and eight on the second, total twelve.

This is cheaper than the above by the cost of four splitters and the connectors.

It's arguable as to whether this will be better or worse, technically, than the splitter solution, but the splitter solution will give you sixteen outputs.

Oh, yeah, I've done this a few times. The first time was when another installer did not properly home run satellite cables; I had to put a 4x8 inside the wall behind a plasma, run two satellite receivers from it, then take four more outputs and run them the rest of the sixty foot run to what would have been the only multiswitch; the signal level is good on everything and we have had no problems in two years of operation.

These multiswitches are the type with local power transformers. I don't think I would use a multi powered by the satellite receivers again. Early on I had a problem with one such if fewer than three receivers were connected to it. Not cool.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Is HD the only thing that needs the other 2 sat feeds? If you only need the 101, you could use two Power-pass splitters on the 13/18 sat A side and run them to a 3x4 Multiswitch. you could even use the 3x4 on any 2 ports of the powered 8-way. If you actually need all 3 feed(HD or local channels), I could probably get the 8-way switches alot cheaper, and cut you a deal. The ones I get don't have the antenna in port, but I get them alot cheaper in bulk...

In some areas, local channels are not on the 101. I said that already, I think. Spanish language programming is also not on the 101.

That's a great idea -- just buy two splitters and split out the 101-only signals!
