I've got a client who tells me that his tivo give off a high pitched hum in the background during playback of some of his recorded programs..anyone know if this is a tivo specific issue before i go out and charge him a service fee for something i can't take care of? the rest of the sources work fine and he added the tivo separately of the equipment we spec'd.. also, the tivo is about four years old..

Is he claiming it's coming from the unit or the audio? Keep in mind that these are computers, complete with hard drives and cooling fan.

If it is from the hard drive, it is getting ready to die. This is a classic computer prefailure sound. The weird part is that it only happens on playback. Or maybe that's the only time he notices it?

Don't ignore possible coincidences --

I installed speakers and a sub for a guy who later complained that the sub hummed. Weird thing -- it hummed with the source disconnected. Then it hummed with the POWER disconnected. Turned out it was his refrigerator on the other side of the wall, and because he had just gotten a sub and mentally tuned in to that low bass, he suddenly heard the refrigerator, which had been humming like that for seven years.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Nice trouble shooting technique!

Reminds me of when I installed some 2m and 70cm Ham Radio Antennas for Satellite. In the next week I had 4 neighbors complain that I was destroying their TV reception. That was quite the trick, as I hadn't even connected the antennas to a transmitter yet!

I used to have a neighborhood ham who came over my son's baby monitor loud and clear, and slightly weaker on the phone.

Yeah, a lot of us have that problem at first. The mute doesn't work on wives or girlfriends. It's confusing. ;-)

A few times when the kids were little, my wife and I drove separate vehicles from L.A. to Las Vegas for CES. We talked on 49 mHz walkie talkies as we drove. They had about 1000' range between the cars. But for at least a mile and a half as we drove through Barstow, we could not communicate. All we could hear was a baby monitor someone had set up somewhere that must have had a gallon behind it!

All right, I'll tell -- gallon is old ham slang for 1000 watts.
