Howdy, I am thinking of getting a Pioneer PDP-5050HD that has the seperate screen and the media box. The media box will go in a cabinet with all the other devices. Dennon A/V receiver, Sony DVD, Dishnetwork 721 PVR, Panasonic VCR.

The display has an IR receiver on the front of it. I would assume that this also passes the IR commands to the media box. On the Media box there are 3 ports of interest, they are labeled CONTROL IN, CONTROL OUT and VCR CONTROL. My question is:

I want to be able to get IR commands to the other devices using my Harmon 6xx remote. So what I am looking for is can I get IR commands out of the Pioneer Media box and into an emitter that I can then put on the other devices. The devices will be behind solid doors.

What I was planning on doing is using a XANTECH kit that has a DINKY IR receiver and put it on the bottom of the Display panel and then run it to a connecting block in the cabinet and then emitters out from there.

Any ideas or suggestions? I've looked at the XANTECH 794 stuff, but it seems to take IR from a XANTECH and put it "IN" to the pioneer devices. I don't know if these CONTROL INPUT/OUPUT/VCR have the "GREEN" jacks as the XANTECH talks about.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the little brother 43 inch version of this and will check the manual when I get home.

I use the VCR output of the Pioneer to control my RCA vcr for automatic recording when I am not home but not sure if the Pioneer is sophisticated enough to pass IR info from other remotes.

But... it sure should be able to as it doesn't seem like it would be very difficult to have that feature on the Pioneer.

The way it works for me is I go into set up and select my RCA VCR model for it to control.

I then plugged in the Pioneer supplied remote "Eye" into the jack on the back of the Media box, I then brought the wired "Eye" around to the front of the RCA VCR near the RCA infrared IR receiver. I than have to leave the RCA on and the Media box will start the RCA recording at my selected time.

I just don't know without looking at the manual if it can also do what you are suggesting.

I will also see if the Pioneer remote has learned the RCA VCR remotes functions and is capable of relaying these functions to the RCA VCR when the cabinet door is closed.

I also know without looking at the manual that you can hook up certain model Pioneer receivers to the Media box and contol the rcvr thru the Pioneer Plasma remote.

I also will say that the help desk at Pioneer is pretty useless. It seems I know more about the Pioneer than they do.

The SR control is only if you have something like a Pioneer reciever or other pioneer products that support SR+. My Pioneer VSX-D814 has that control in/ control out too. The remote has a setting to turn on the SR+. You have to buy a special cable for it though, they say a three ringed 1/8" jack. But its to control the TV with one Remote and not change the the input setting on the remote/ reciever
What you should choose does not end in the here and now, but how much you want to deal with it in the futre

I read my manual and have to agree with stumped. The device has to support SR.

In additon I attempted to program my Pioneer Plasma remote to work with my RCA VCR. I found that I had to leave the door open on the cabinet to get the VCR to respond. This leads me to believe that the Plasma IR receiver does not pass the RCA VCR commands to my RCA VCR via the Pioneer Media box.

I wish it had ! It seems like it could since I got the wired Media box IR pointed at the RCA VCR. ANd I know already that the Pioneer will start recordings initated in the Media box but it will not pass the Remote control RCA signals thru the media box.

There is another output from the Media box that will control devices but it says in the owners manual that it will only work with Digital VCR devices.

I still like the Pioneer but there are a few things that Pioneer could have easily improved on like the lousy OTA digital TV guide.
