OK, OK, I know there's a better forum to ask this question, but I'm curious if any of you guys and gals have any experience with the Sony HDR-HC1 Hi def camcorder. I'm seriously contemplating getting one before I go on my next vacation.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Yeah; I played with it; pretty good; very good colours ones you hook up to DLP TV. That's definitely my next purchase in near future. Very handy; very nice zoom. You can take photos @ 1024 I think; they are okay, nothing crazy. You can also use regular DV tapes; although they last about 30 mins; but quality is the same as on the so called DV HD tapes. If you need a camera; I know its price'y but definetly way to go to record personal video!!! If you have more detailed questions let me know.

I have its big brother, the HDR-FX1, and I couldn't be happier.

I looked at that, but the weight of it looks a little heavy to be lugging around on vacation. The 3 CCD versus 1 CMOS looks appealing as well, but that weight issue keeps coming back to haunt me. Any thoughts there?

For my purposes I wanted a big camera... but I agree that for travelling something smaller would be good. However the image quality, especially indoors and at night, is absolutely fantastic.

Is the output to a TV in letter box format ?

Or is the whole 16:9 screen filled with the picture?

How does it compare to OTA HD pics ?

It's 16x9 native format. And it's practically as good as any of the best HD you've seen on TV...

There was a problem with fast panning with the JVC HD camcorder. Is there any problems with the Sony? We're due for a new camcorder, and I want to get HD.

It's not perfect at panning, mostly due to the bitrate, but it's pretty good. Much better than the JVC. If you can wait a few weeks I'll be filming the CEDIA tradeshow in HD and I hope to release the resulting video in HD here (last CES' video was also filmed in HD but my computer didn't want to cooperate for editing so I ended up working just in SD).

Daniel,

Thanks that is what I wanted to hear. Sounds like fun editing the video. I was using my HP Image Zone application to Edit just one slide and it kept crashing and locking up the computer. And that was just one Hi-Res .jpg of a 35mm slide.

By the way is that Pan problem you guys are talking about similar to the Pixelation problems I observe on PBS HD when the do fast Pan closeups ? Or is it more a xmission problem?

I just got back from Munich and Vienna, and I took an HC1 with me.
I can't tell you how glorious my footage looks. It's truly amazing, and I'm so happy I bought it.
I took two of the medium-sized batteries (QM71?) and a box of sony's high-end tapes, the PHDVM63DM tapes... I'm very satisfied with this camera.
