In the Raleigh NC area the local PBS station rebroadcast the NASA channel on one of PBS's multicast channels for the landing which of course did not take place.

But it was still cool to get the NASA station via OTA simulcast.

That is one of the things I am hoping we will start to get more of with OTA ATSC, with some sub channels of other 'compelling' content, PBS with NASA, maybe have ABC start with ESPN or CBS with MTV...

Hey, one can only hope...

I don't like subchannels if they compromise HD quality. 20mbit is low for this type of encoding as it is...

Daniel,

I expected you to reply sooner than this as I know how you dislike multichannels bandwidth robbing.

It is such a two edged sword for me. On one hand I appreciate that PBS bothers to rebroadcast NASA space channel . But on the other hand it bugs me to be watching PBS HD show and see the close on pixelation which occors because of the bandwidth being robbed for the multicast channels.

One thing that PBS does is when the are broadcasting HD OTA which is only between 8pm and 11pm here in Raleigh, NC they turn off broadcasting on all their other multicast channels except for one digital channel.

I am guessing that if they also turned off that last digital channel, my HD experience would be such that the close up digitization would dissappear.

Mpls is great for this. PBS has 2 stations. So channel 2 digital is HD, all by itself. Channel 17 digital is 5 multicast SD channels. We get both, it's almost like there is someone with a brain working there. I haven't watched much yet to see how theHD pic is, but with some limited viewing it's been beautiful.

Spiky,

Wow 2 stations now that is the way to go. And one devoted to HD !!

I assume here in Raleigh they just have the one ATSC broadcast station with the multi channels - but don't know for certain.

There used to be two PBS stations in Buffalo... alas before HD started one was sold and became a UPN affiliate. :-(

I'm pretty sure there wasn't one.

In Minneapolis, 17 analog is mostly radar weather, with some PBS stuff in the evenings. 2 analog is the standard PBS station. So it worked out well when they added in digital channels. The 5 multicast stations on 17 digital are digital versions of the two analog channels, PBSKids, PBSYou and one other.

Before WNLO 23 was a UPN affiliate (and hence was a PBS station), the UPN affiliate in the Buffalo/Niagra area was WNGS-TV 67.

For the most part now, WNGS has nothing of major interest. It is off air from 12am-8am, and from 8am-12pm they are a Shop NBC affiliate. Throughout the day there are numoerus paid commercials, with their 5-7 programming consistanting of Recipe TV, Living Single, Martin and Cheers. They do air a local 7pm news cast.

Q: Who owns WNGS-TV?
A: Unicorn Communications owns WNGS-TV

Q: Who runs WNGS-TV?
A: B&C Communications, LLC. runs WNGS-TV.

Not sure if WNGS has any plans for Digital Transmission or not, but there was a UPN affiliate and I am sure that WNGS can find a lot of compelling content for sub stations OTA HDTV... I like the Raliegh idea...
