I recently bought a Voom receiver off of Ebay hoping to use it for OTA HDTV reception. When I plug in the box I can get to the set up menu, but I cannot get it to display any channels. Can anyone help with me? Is there anything I could pull up in the set up menu to determine if the box I bought is active or is it a $50 paperweight?

Thanks,
Bud

I was able to use it as a tuner only, but only after cussing a bit. It has been a while, but try one of the colored buttons (im thinking red). If I remember correctly, this bypassed the setup screen and allowed me to use the tuner.

I assume you have it connected to an OTA antenna using the terrestrial input on the back of the receiver, which means unplugging the diplexer module that comes as standard with the receiver.

If so you should be able to access the local channels setup using the Voom button followed by the green button, which leads you to the setup menu and should allow you to scan for local channels.

You may then need to go into the local channels option and hide/unhide the channels available in your area. (The box may have been setup for a different DMA).

I am out of town for a few days, so all of this is from memory, but I will check when I get home.

Of course you may also have a box that has not been activated, or was sent a kill hit, which means it is indeed a $50 doorstop.

Hope this helps some.
