Hello: Got a bill from Voom today for a small amount and they told me they were signing over the settop box and dish to me to do as I pleased. I'm thinking to charge them for removing the dish and dipsosing of the box. Is there any use for the Voom box, will it work on any other sat network?

Voom no longer exists anymore, they went under. Moreover, you can not charge them to come and remove the dish, especially since they are bankrupt. The reciever is good for OTA-HDTV reception only at this point, there are loads of Voom recievers not going for much on eBay as we speak...

The dish is good as it can be used as a legacy dish for any DBS-BBS frequency, such as 61.5, 72.6, 82, 91, 101,110,119,148,157

So the're GIVING you the dish and box, and you want to CHARGE them for removing the dish? Keep it hooked up and get you OTA. Let me know how the charging process goes.
No, I wont install your plasma with an orange extension cord hanging down the wall.

I remember in another post that the Voom HD portion of the Voom receiver could be disabled by Voom or if you bought a Voom receiver on EBAY that was NOS and had never been on line that it may not pick up HD OTA because it needs to be enabled first. I think it was Dadio who had Voom that mentioned it.

It would be nice to get this clearified as buying a Voom receiver thru Ebay would be an inexpensive way for someone to try out OTA HD for the first time.

I just checked on EBAY they all appear to be going for around $50.00 each for ones with all packing material. I wonder what they would be selling for if they did not have OTA HD capability.

Some wherehouse must be full of these receivers and getting ready to surplus them out.

Too bad they did not have a built in Hard Drive HD recorder !!!!!!

Don,

You're right, it was me who mentioned it.

I got my final bill through yesterday, with the same message telling me all the equipment was now mine. (Which was what I was hoping for when I signed up for Voom in the first place).

Cheapest OTA HD receivers I have seen have been around $200. Voom kindly gave me two receivers, a satellite dish, an 8' Channelmaster antenna and several runs of RG6, with everything installed for $1. Seems to me that if I were to have everything removed by others and sent Voom a bill, I would have difficulty billing Voom for more than the dollar that I initially paid.

To anyone thinking of buying a Voom box through Ebay or similar, make sure the box has been activated, and that the current owner did not discontinue service prior to Voom closing it's doors, since they were sending kill signals which also disabled OTA reception.

I'm still getting OTA HD programming using the receivers, although there is no programme guide available. (I know some people are working on resolving that issue!).

As stated in my previous post, I know that a couple of people are working on the firmware within the Voom receiver in an attempt to allow it to receive and decode the psip datastream so that the programme guide can be displayed onscreen.

If/when they are successful, my personal opinion is that there may be legal implications with the firmware developer, but only time will tell.

In the meantime, I go to zap2it for my local listings which is fairly accurate.

I see Voom Sr won the battle against NYC putting in that new Sports Complex or whatever it was called to host the Olympics and which would have been direct competition for the NYC sports complex he owns I think he owns the Garden. But lost the War over Voom to his son.

I guess I would not recommend someone buying a Voom Box presently as the seller may or may not know if it has been deactivated although a $50.00 going price for a Voom box is a inexpensive gamble.

BTW - I am not impressed with the Pioneer Guide as part of my PDP-4340HD Plasma. It takes for ever to create the guide and it even adds channels you have deleted from your view list. And than the second you deselect it, it loses all the info it just created and even a second later if you decide to review the guide you have to wait for it to rebuild the whole screen guide.

It is interesting that TV guide has not bothered to add HD subchannels to their guide.

TV Guide has probably never heard of HDTV. What a useless company.

Seems Dish Networks have not heard of Local HDTV as well since their 942 receiver is apparently incapable of decoding the psip data from an OTA stream. (Only info I get is "digital service"!).

If they were to fix that then I would have two working Voom OTA HD tuners available for someone

I have written TV Guide twice now to put back ABC,NBC,CBS in the guide. It use to be there and they removed it for who know what reason. You can go by the numbers but they are different dependent on your provider. I looked at a tvf guide in a Hotel room and that tv guide did use the letters.

I really think they are a bloated company that cares less about their customers.

I bought a Voom recieve off of Ebay hoping to use it for OTA reception. When I plug it in I can get to the setup mode, but I cannot figure out how to get it to display the OTA channels. Can anyone help me out or point me to another website with setup information for a newby?

Thanks,
Bud
