Dadio, I have asked about this DVD recorder before and eveybody has said it a POS! When you record on that DVD recorder from the DVD player, the picture has lines in from what I've heard. There is hacked firmware updates for ti that get rid of those lines. thanks for the info, I was just weating unitll someone has actually tried one before I though about one. I have seen a Pioneer DVD recorder there to like $200. Also at that same store they had the same Pioneer system that I have only the reaer speakers are wireless and it comes with the same DVD recorder I was just talking about from PIoneer. I got my with a DVD player and regualr reser speaker for $400 (on sale from $500 from Costco) At Walmart, that system was $648. So Id rather pay for the DVD recorder itself
What you should choose does not end in the here and now, but how much you want to deal with it in the futre

Hey Stumped,

I don't know if my box already has updated firmware or not, but I have not seen any lines like you describe. I did try copying from my DVD player yesterday without any problems or lines. Perhaps I got the only good one, but it works fine here.

Looks like it's been awhile since the last response to this thread...any updates on DVD recorders with an ATSC turner? I think the closest I've seen was in last week's Future Shop flyer was a hard-drive based recorder with an ATSC turner (I can't remember the brand or price).
OTA HD setup: Harmony 659, Sony LCD GWII 60", Samsung SIR-TS160, CM 4228, CM 7775, CM 9521A

Does anyone know if the DVD recorder VCR recorder combos that I see at places like Walmart for around $200.00 have a built in NTSC(Analog) tuner?

Also do the DVD recorder only units for under $200 have a built in NTSC(Analog) tuner?

It may sound like a dumb question but I have tried reading the info printed on the outside of the different models boxes in the store and none of them say they have a built in Tuner of NTSC or ATSC variety.

I doubt there is an ATSC tuner since there is no way to record HD on a DVD right now. Doesn't the JVC D-VHS have an ATSC tuner built in? That's still the only HD recorder other than a PC.

The DVDRs do have NTSC tuners. I'm pretty sure all of them do, just like VCRs. My Panny ES10 does, it is under $200. Might be some question of them being stereo-capable, I don't know.

Spiky,

Thanks, I hear you on the HD issue. Manufactures will probably wait until the standardize on the new HD DVD format before they include a ATSC tuner, but than they won't let you copy a show broadcast in HD anyway.

Considering they all record 480i only, anyway, it shouldn't really matter where the tuner is. You are downconverting from HD resolution no matter what. I have done several recordings from my HDTivo to the ES10 and they look great, esp HD sources. My only complaint is that I can't encode anamorphic on discs, but that's what I get for not buying a $400 or more DVDR.

My latest purchase of a Sony High-Definition Digital Video Recorder the DHG-HDD500 does a FANTASTIC job of recording HDTV and playing it back to my 65" Mitsubishi HDTV. It has both antenna and CATV inputs. That works great at my location where the cable company does not have all the networks on their system yet. It allows me to get one channel OTA and another from the cable company. It may be some time before NBC shows up, but someday. . .
The spec sheet states:
NTSC American TV Standard (480i)
ATSC (8VSB terrestrial), ATSC Compliant 8VSB (1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i)
I added this unit to three Panasonic DVD-ram hard drive recorders. (yes, I know, I watch far too much TV)
If you want a great HDTV recorder, this is a very nice(expensive)one.

Yup, I've had one of the Sonys for a while now. A few little initial quirks, but it works nicely and far more reliably than the Scientific Atlanta I also have... now if only it had two tuners! :-)

Nope. Not many OTA receivers do.
