Hi, I'm new to the forum, I live about 2.5 miles from the CHCH tower. Because of where I'm located, CHCH and CTS cause problems with 7,14,33,38,and 39. Does anyone know where I might be able to find channel traps for 11 and 36? Maybe even links to circuit diagrams to build them myself.
Thanks

I would advice you to contact both stations tech departments directly and talk to their engineers with more details, they will likely help you. Channel Vision manufactures all sorts of traps so search for that company online if needed. You must be using some sort of amplifier that is being overload by the strong close stations because ATSC tuners are designed so in their first stages they adjust their filters to filter out unwanted adjacent signals otherwise you would see people who lives nearby transmitters complaining they get no reception , and that is not the case.

I am using a cm-7777 with a Denny's HD Stacker antenna at about 40' with a rotor. Without the pre-amp the Buffalo signals arn't strong enough to reach the TV. With the amp the signals are more than strong enough, but the picture breaks up inconsistently. From what I understand, an overpowering channel, with or without a pre-amp can have a negative effect on weaker channels up to 6 in either direction. Thats why I believe that the CHCH tower is causing problems with 7,9,14 and 33,38 and 39 in my setup. I will attempt to contact CHCH and CTS to see what their techs say. Thanks for helping point me it the right direction.

Niks, we'd be interested to see the TV Fool report for your location. Go to tvfool.com, key in your exact location, then copy-n-paste the "Share the results with others" link here. Please be as accurate is possible with location and antenna height.

The report might reveal something that has been overlooked by you, or us.. .

Niks, judging from that report, it looks like your antenna isn't high enough.

Look at the "Path" column and you'll see what I mean. All the American stations are "2Edge" and "Tropo", as opposed to "LOS" (line of sight), meaning that the signal is either diffracted or you have to hope for a bounce off the Troposphere to get a picture.

Try running the re-running your report, but this time increase the antenna height 5 feet. Keep re-running it in 5 foot increments until you get to the point where the american stations are at least "1Edge" (best would be LOS). That will give you a good idea of how much higher you need to raise your antenna to get a picture that doesn't drop out on you. Hope this makes sense..

Even if I could put up a 200' antenna the signal would still be 2edge, because of the escarpment. What leads me to believe that it was a problem with 11 and 36 is that i am able to recieve 23(51), 26 and 49, which I shouldn't according to tvfool, and that 9 which is los has the same problem with the picture pixelating as the other channels surrounding 11 and 36. Also, I always have descent signal strength on all the stations I listed with the pixelation problem. Any time of day or night. I also have tried at least 4 different tuners with the same results. Also, when I say it pixelates, the video and audio doesn't freeze like it does when the signal strength is too low.

200 feet would be impractical (grin). Wish I had a better answer for you.. .

I believe the problem is your antenna is way to powerful and that tower is too close to you especially when you are using the even more powerful Titan2 7777 pre-Amp. You may be better off picking up say the CM 4220 which has a wide transition range that should work better when you are close to the tower and perhaps combine it with you other antenna. Direct your antenna toward Buffalo and the CM4220 toward Toronto. Use a high end splitter (2400 MHz), keep the two RG6 cables the same length, and have this seteu runthrough the 7777 pre amp.

Is this overkill? Don't know, perhaps somebody else can elaborate.

I think I might be onto something. I found a diagram with calculator for a
twin-t notch filter on the Okawa Electric Design webpage. After punching in resistances for a while, I figured out what I needed to notch out 11. Went, got the parts and built a prototype on a bread board. So far, 11 has been attenuated considerably, 9 isn't acting up and I get a weak signal from 10, which never showed up before. I have yet to try it where it should go, between the antenna and the pre-amp.

Nike, can you give us the link to that website? I'd love to see that.. .

One thing I learned from other sites as far as the math goes, R1 always equals R2. C1, C2 and C3 are usually the same value, usually in pF to attenuate the MHz spectrum and to keep the attenuatd segment of the spectrum as small as possible R3 = 1/4 of R1. The use of potentiometers is important to be as precise as possible because the tollerances on a standard resistor can be from 2% to 10%. Also, the results are in Hz, so when you get the results, make sure you count 9 digits before the ".".

enjoy

CBC's program data is there in EIT/ETT when I do a TSReader scan, and it's present on all 3 my ATSC tuners. I know there are some devices it doesn't seem to work with - no idea if it's something funky in the PSIP or something not quite right with the tuner firmware. I've heard of other channes/tuner combinations that have the similar issues.

I believe I just figured out what is causing some tuners to not display the CBC program name and details - some handle it fine, don't choke on it. It won't make much sense unless you know a bit about ATSC PSIP, but it comes down to how CBC assigns packet ids (PIDs) to EIT and ETT tables. I'll try to reach someone at the CBC who might understand what I'm talking about.

I was getting the CBC psip fine when they were at 1080i, I even get
Global's and CITY's now. CBLT is the only one not showing up any more on the OSD.

I have checked both of my tv's and they both have TV guide info displayed from CBC (chn 5-1), however, about a week or so ago, they did not display the info.

TV are Vizio
