Hi,all.Need advice on whether to upgrade to HD thru Dish Network.I currently have a PVR 501 & a Sony HD ready tv.If I go with the 6000 dish HD receiver,I lose my PVR [which the better half won't allow].Is there a way to set my system up so I'm using the PVR except when watching HD programming? & Is it worth the $600 to do so? Are they gonna have a HD/PVR receiver soon & at a reasonable cost?Has anyone else struggled with this issue?.
Thanks, Kev

Can't you just hook up the two tuners as you would any two-receiver system, and select what you watch as any two sources?

Yes, you could. That's what everyone does, there are large numbers of people with HD who also have DTivos or other PVRs.

And also, they are working on a HD-PVR. It will be called the 921 or something. God only knows when/if it will come out. There are issues swirling about copy protection for HDTV, etc. that will muddle the HD-PVR issue. I believe you can get hardware for a PC that will turn it into a PVR, hardly an inexpensive or convenient solution.

Larry, could I use diplexors to run the hd signal through the existing rg6 cable [i.e from the dish ?]
How would I set it up at the dish end with 500 dish + old 18" dish? Quad lnb ?
Cheers Kev.

To combine 2 dishes and send to 2 receivers, you will need a switch. Diplexers won't work. HD and SD will be combined in the same cable by the switch, but you will need a separate cable for each receiver.

If you use the 6000 receiver for OTA HDTV, you can diplex an antenna into the cable from the dish.

A quad LNB is not necessary if you only have 2 receivers. Or if you are using a large switch to combine two dishes.

A basic setup: [Link: dishnetwork.com]
