i have a customer that has 3 tv's in the same room in an entertainment center. How can i control all 3 motorola cable boxes with an IR system so that when i change the channel on one of the tv's, the other 2 tv's dont change also. is there a way to have descrete codes for the different cable boxes. Also 2 of the tv's are the same make and model. Is there also a way to control them seperately also???

Thanks

The cheap low tech is to disassemble the remote(not an easy task with todays snap-together models)and put a tube shaped piece of electrical tape or heat shrink tubing around the led emmitter. This will narrow the IR beam. How narrow depends on how long you are able to make the tube(the front cabinet IR filter can get in the way). You can get it pretty pinpoint to where pieces of equipment 18" apart will work independently.

The hi tech method is to use a remote repeater system, cover all the equipments remote receiver's and use a Xantech RT-8 addressable IR Router.

Whatever method is used for the cable boxes should be used for the TVs as well.
phil's low tech method is great if the walls are not roo reflective. A dark room would be great for this.
phil's high tech method would require you to use a remote that would issue two commands for each button push -- a)which cable box/TV it was calling to and b)the actual command.

Another approach I used in a sports bar with seven DSS receivers was to put seven (three in this case)IR receivers in, each at the back of a rectangular tube shaped so you can stick the end of the remote into it and then push the remote's buttons.
The drawback of this approach is that you can only use the remote in one location, where you put these tubes. In a sports bar, that's easy; behind the bar.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Yor quandry is simplified by examining the nature of the universe. All things seperately may work together in harmony. Sue the method recommended by the honorable Phil, in conjuction with placement of the cable boxes in seperate rooms. Put IR flasher on each. Use eye at twin tv location. If you can shape it in your mind, you will find it in your life. Now get back to work grasshopper!!!

Budah,

After reflecting all night about the quandry presented in your gospel speach about the wonderful unknown... I have concluded, after much deep thought, mind you, that the universe is not round but pyramidal. To top it off, I feel the answer is found around the nuts of a Botswanan Green Toed Monkey.
