I just had Direct tv installed, I am in the market to buy a big screen within the next week.I have heard that direct tv looks grainy on hdtvs because the signal is not hidef and that I would be better off buying a regular big screen for the time being? So I,m asking the true experts, you guys. What should I do?

What is the major content of your viewing? Satellite? DVD? Both? If both, what is the split? 50/50, 70/30?

I suggest whatever you buy, stick with a 4:3 ratio screen. And because I have yet to see a TV with a "squeeze mode" that I think looks well when used. I would recommend doing something that is non HD, given that most of your viewing will be satellite.

Well we all have our opinion (and if you look in some of the other forums like hometheaterspot you will find every point of view!) I would personally say the opposite to John - get a 16:9 HDTV-ready set with a decent stretch mode like Toshiba. And the "problems with regular tv" are related primarily to screen size and the performance of the line doubler and other electronics in the set, nothing to do with HDTV.
I have had HDTV (Hughes E-86) for a year now and it is nothing short of amazing. And we watch just about all regular TV in stretch mode.

1 for, 1 against

Are all the votes tallied?

Well, I just bought a 16:9 HDTV Mitsubishi 55819 so I guess that's 2:1.

I love my WS HDTV Panny 47". And I understand there is some HD content on Direc tv. My ISF tech says HD is even better than the DVD's I watch now. I vote for the future; get a big WS now!

Unless I was buying a "throw away" TV (say $500 or less) that I only planned to keep for a year or so, I would absolutely get a 16:9 ratio.

Sure HDTV has been slow to arrive, but the ball is quickly picking up speed. With the NCTA committing to have DTV via cable in the top 100 markets by 1/1/03, widescreen programmin will become much more abundant.

The time to buy an HDTV is now, and by definition HDTV is 16:9
