Does anyone have knowledge of whether T/W Cable in Midtown, NYC sends out digital audio signals to the AC3 output on the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100? I would just try it, but I have bend space and time to get to the back of my receiver and, well, you know how not fun that is...

Also, stupid question... Does the AC3 jack take normal RCA cables or do I need a special "digital" cable?

And finally, is there any way to subscribe to certain threads on this site? I am new-ish, have threads running in 11 places, and am having trouble keeping track. Oh the questions i have...

Dum, as to the cable question, if the digital output uses a standard RCA jack, then any decent interconnect will suffice.

In fact, if I needed one cable for an analog connection and one for a digital connection, and had two different quality cables at my disposal, I'd use the better one for the analog connection.

It is the nature of digital signals that, if the signal reaches the destination unbroken, the signal contains all of the information needed to reconstruct a complete audio signal.

I have TWC digital in Midtown. All the stations pass a digital signal except for the local stations 1,2,4,5,7,9, and 11. Only HBO, Showtime, and I think Cinemax broadcast some programming in 5.1.

Hold the phone!!!! What do i do if I have Tivo? It doesn't have digital audio so i will have to go straight to the receiver. Won't i get a mismatch in the voices to the videos?

grrrr....

I have one output going in to the Tivo with one set of connections and the other going into the receiver. Tivo Shows I watch through tivo in stereo otherwise I just watch TV direct. Or you can get two boxes.

Sorry, i am an idiot...

So when you want 5.1 surround, you watch directly from the TV with digital. If you are just chilling, you go through the Tivo?

But, if I want Tivo and 5.1 Surround, i am out of luck?

Thanks.

as far as the cabling the RCA must be at least 75 ohm resistance if I remember corrrectly. I connected my cable box to my receiver and found in my are central NY that only one channel primary HBO broadcasts in 5.1. There were several channels that broadcast in digital, but was only pro logic. Also if your receiver does not have auto switching on your audio inputs it can be a pain switching between digital channels and analog
