I am considering purchasing the Phillips TiVo recorder. I realize I will need to pay the additional $5 per month fee to DirecTv for the additional receiver, but will I also need to pay another fee to TiVo to be able to record. I plan to choose the shows I want to record myself and do not want to pay for a service to select shows for me.

Thanks,

Kris

Without a fee the DirecTivo will only be able to pause for up to 30 minutes. Recording is not allowed.

If you have DirecTV and you buy a second TIVO receiver, you don't have the pay the extra fee to TIVO, just the additional $5 per month to DirecTV.

You do have to pay either the monthly fee or a 1 time fee to get the full functionalitl for the Tivo. YOu are allowed, I think, to have more than 1 Tivo at your residence and only pay 1 9.95 fee the rest are free.

I love the thing, I also like Ultimate TV but there is no lifetime offer so I got the Tivo and bought it for lifetime.

Correct. There's a fee per additional tuner from DirecTV, but a TiVi "subscription" covers all tuners per account for one fee.

Are you sure about the "one fee for all TiVOs in an account"? We have two and payed two subscriptions, and everything we read says the subscription is tied to the hardware unit. In other words, you can't transfer the subscription from one box to another, such as if a newer model comes ourt and I want to upgrade.

Read the fine print ... actually it wasn't that fine. Have they changed their policy in the past few months?

One $10 fee per month or one lifetime fee for all DirecTivos on the account. Stand alone models are pay per Tivo. Check out AVS Tivo Community in the direcTV section. Some of the regular posters have up to 5 DirecTivos on their account and only pay $10 per month Tivo fee.

Are there any other hard disk recorders out there that do not require any monthly or lifetime fees? If so, do any of them have DirecTv tuners built into them.

Robert - This is straight from the TiVo Service Agreement in my SAT-T60 receiver's manual:

"Definition of Lifetime Service - If you paid a Lifetime Service fee for your Receiver, the TiVo service is guaranteed for the lifetime of that Receiver" ... "will be provided only to that particular Receiver and therefore cannot be transferred to any others you may purchase."

Are you saying that this has changed?

Kris - TiVo makes money only out of the service subscription. There is a ton of work to create and maintain (and keep enhancing) the software, to provide it and integrate it into the hardware, and to acquire and format the guide information on a continuous basis. You will not find anybody doing this for free, not as long as we need to pay for food, lodging and entertainment :).

Cheers / DJ

Go to the Tivo web site at [Link: directv.tivo.com]

In the third paragrapy of the "How much does it cost?" section, it reads:

"With TiVo, you have a choice of payment options - either an affordable $9.95 a month or a convenient product lifetime subscription of $249. TiVo Service for additional DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo units is included in the DIRECTV mirroring charges."

I can verify this with certainty as I have 2 DirecTVTIVO receivers and pay no fee to TIVO on the second receiver. TIVO even sent a promo e-mail about it on the TV during the holiday season. It does not apply to standalones.

Dang! As usual, get in early and get screwed! You think they'll refund me the extra sub? :)

Have a great week-end,

There's no monthly fee with a Replay. That's why I got a Panasonic Showstopper (which is the same as a replay).
