I have a pioneer Elite big screen and The Dish Network. The picture is so poor. Does anyone have a big screen and use Direct TV with better results? I don't know if both are bad and this is as good as it gets. Thanks, Tom

Dish is using maximum compression so they can add the local channels required under the "Must Carry" law. DirecTV also had to add about the same number of channels but they accomplished it by sending up a new satellite specifically for locals. This freed up bandwidth and will hopefully lead to better picture quality.

DTV and Dish Network both look like crap in my honest opinion due to the compression rate mentioned by rlj5242 DTV will be less so when the local spot sat is stationed and online (may be allready)If you want supirior video use a large c/ku and 4d satellite dish (the big one) if you have the space and the money .
Or an off air for network . the last two should and will give you a far better picture than DTV or Dish Net .
Digital channels are another thread.

kabster,
All of the local channels were moved to the spot beam sat the morning of 12/27.

We have a 60"+ 4:3 Samsung RPTV at work which is usually of Fox News off of Direct TV and I'm always impressed at just how good the picture is for a standard definition signal. Is Fox News genearlly a better than average signal over Direct TV?

I've got a 65" Mitsubishi 16:9 and Direct TV and the picture is great. Just got a Phillips DirectTV-TIVO receiver and am in heaven!

If Fox News generally a better than average signal from DirecTV?

No, about average, I'd say. But the nature of what they broadcast makes it easy for the system to look pretty good. News services generally have a lot of "talking head" shots which leave major portions of the screen unchanged from second to second. Such images don't put near the strain on the bandwidth as, say, a basketball game.

Makai,

Thanks, that's a good point. I'll try to remember to pay attention when they're showing clips with lots of motion to see how that compares.

Dish has been excellent with me. I have a Sony 61". I heard DirecTv is worse because the signal is re-filtered within the box, similar to the way a signal is passed thru a vcr. Has your picture been good with a dvd? If so, its probably your receiver. I strongly recommend the Dish PVR either 501 or the new 721.

Good LUCK

A friend of mine has DirecTV and I have Dish. I would prefer Dish any day. DirecTV is full of all sorts of crap that I doubt that many people use. All of this crap is just a constant source of confusion to my friend. Being able to record to a VCR thru an IR blaster by just selecting it on the grid is a great feature that DirecTV does not have. I also have the Dish PVR 501 and love it. I just cannot see why anyone would want to pay $10 a month for Tivo features. Dish just added a search function that works just great. Until recently, Dish has offered more HDTV channels than DirecTV

I beg to differ .

It doesnt matter what you buy just as long as you get a TIVO lol Search around and you'll see why

Dish is attempting to purchase Hughes. Jury is still out on whether the govt will allow the merger. Nothing is final.

Dish is definitely proposing to acquire Direct TV although the deal still has to get regulatory approval so it may not happen.
FYI as far as I know there has only been one "scientific" comparison of the picture quality between Dish and Direct TV. This comparison is typically done every three months - the last one was in April. It concluded that "it is quite clear that Direct TV delivers superior PQ". Their previous comparison in January concluded that "Direct TV was the winner in PQ, but it was quite close". One interesting comment in the April test was that both the providers had much improved PQ since the previous test in January.
