...hi..I have seen many complaint's about satellite receiver's and even some other electronics with screwy read outs...melted cards..
color bars on the screen...and all kindsa weird shit....here's the scoop on how to correct the problem, if u have'nt already cooked the receiver, or just plain ole' prevent it from happening....

1st, you folks need to understand that these directv and dish receivers are in-expensive, asian made, plastic boxed.....basically throw away, mass produced , cheaply made devices..
yes...thats right, they have some good circuitry, and digital processors, etc, etc, but these, as are most item's, arent american made any longer, and are essentially not very quality orientated, especially at today's lower prices...THEY MAKE THEM ONLY AS GOOD AS THEY HAVE TO.....so if u want to make them last, and last for a long time, without any picture degradation, or sound problems, or finicky re-actions with on screen menu's.....
just keep them VERY VERY cool....locate them in an area that has constant air around them , and i dont mean 6 inches either.....because , like most electronics, they have transformers in them to convert 120volts down to from 5 to 15 volts ac or dc, they inherently TRANSFER great amounts of heat, to the case, from the chassis.....therefore because of this amount of heat, the IC's can mal-function causing screwy things to happen, the access cards can melt, and the transformer could totally just wear out prematurlly, or even meltdown....anyway , without going into the specific's and electronic
terminology...keep the damn thing as cool as possible....dont put it at the bottom of a pile of equip.....put it out in the open when possible
or at the very top of the equip at worst....i OFTEN USE little 35mm film cups , the black one's, as little legs glued or unglued to the bottoms of most of our equipmet....that way , the equip is raised 2 or 3 inches off and away from the item it is sitting in, receiving less of the lower units heat as it is transfered into the air..sorta. allowing the air, and heat to circulate.....memeber', heat rises............the cooler u keep ANY and all of your electronics , the longer and more trouble free they will be....HEAT and the inherent transformers that create the heat , are the biggest detriments to electronic equipment of ANY type.....we have some hi-end satellite receivers, and other electronic items, that we have had running 8-10 hrs daily for 4-5 yrs...WHY or HOW SO....because we keep them isolated so that they can radiate their heat out to the open air, and by doing so they run cooler, and are still running well........YOU SAY
THEY SHOULD LAST ANYWAY FOR 4 or 5years or longer???????........jokes on us, they wont....is'nt any asian electronic item made , or even american made , cause we use their parts in most instances, that will LAST , if it is subjected to undue, or excessive heat build-up..
.......keep ur stuff reasonably cool, and it WILL last indefintely .....mine does!!!!!!...
LAST TIP....any new from the box electronic item
should be run in for the first 4-5 days constantly, and I DO mean constantly.....their failure rate is usually within the first few days , otherwise they will last usually for years,,,,,EXCEPTING, heat build up!!!!!!!!!!!!.......heat will wipe out any electronic device if its subjected to enough of it
happy new year and good luck
