I have this Motorola URC600 and some of the buttons are failing. I'm told I'll have to spend about 50$ for a new one, which I find semi-outrageous. According to [Link: digitalhome.ca] a cheap remote can be versatiley programmed to mimic mine--it just requires a certain amount of dedication. Is that true?

The URC600 is made by UEI, who also make Comcast (new $6 shipped on eBay) remotes, OneForAll, and some RCA remotes (e.g. RCA RCRP05B).  Use the 990 Command to blink back the setup code(s) you're using. We can check to see which of the UEI remotes have the same setup codes.

So what exactly are you saying, that I should buy a Comcast, OneForAll or a certain RCA remote (retailing around 6$) then look at programming it? With a single press for each function on my current remote, I'm able to cycle through the aspect, load the recorded program listing, skip forwards and backwards and control the volume and mute on my TV. With 2 key presses I can toggle the CCs. Do you think I could set up one of these to do all that?

Yes, I think the Comcast remote will be cheapest, and it is intended to be used with Motorola, Scientific Atlanta, and Cisco boxes, among others.  Again, blink back the Cable setup code, and I can tell you more definitely.
BTW, check before buying any RCA other than the RCRP05B.  If you get a OneForAll, it may need to be a reasonably new model--it depends on which setup code you're currently using with the URC600.

Oh, you want to know about my current remote. Well, I tried following those instructions, but my remote doesn't have a "SETUP" button. So I tried assuming that several others were that button, but nothing worked. This is what my remote looks like: [Link: secure.shawdirect.ca]

According to the manual, pressing the SAT button until it blinks twice is the effective Setup button.  It has instructions for the 990 blink back.  BTW, does your box work with IR?  Perhaps you're currently using UHF.

Yeah, I tried that, too, although the SAT button didn't blink twice. All the device buttons kept blinking until I released the SAT button. Then I followed the instructions for the 990 blink back and pushing buttons 1-4 gave nothing. When I pushed 5, it just transmitted to the SAT box. According to strict interpretation, this means I have a 4-digit device and its code is 0.
Which manual did you look at? The only one I found just tells me how to blink back the code for my TV.
There might be something in that. I seem to remember the tech support woman telling me that the only thing I needed to look out for is getting an after market remote that is UHF-compatible.

The SAT button should have blinked twice, but the instructions do say that for SAT the blink back isn't the setup code, but instead the 3 digit satellite address.

Anyway, unless the box accepts IR, there aren't any cheap remotes which will work.

Damn.
Well, I just talked to tech support and I'm told that the box definitely accepts IR. I'm told that the IR remote they'd provide is an IRC600.

Since we can't get at the SAT setup code, I looked up the Motorola boxes, and they use the ordinary GI Cable IR protocol.  (GI stands for General Instruments, which was purchased by Motorola years ago.)   So the appropriate setup codes are 0476 or 1376. If any functions are missing, we can add them using the 994 command.

Either the Comcast or RCRP05B will be the closest match for buttons.
