I just got a 20 inch (IS-TV049020) Insignia Television. I use a DRC450 Motorola Universal remote. Every manual I have and every PDF I have downloaded online has no listing for Insignia. No hint in the "Insignia TV Code for Direct TV Remote" thread in the "Satellite, Cable & HDTV" section has yeilded positive results. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me?

I haven't responded because (a) I don't know what signals the Insignia uses and (b) I don't know anything about the Motorola remote. I suspect that this is the same story for any other expert that might otherwise have replied.

The Insignia can't be that common of a brand because there aren't any files for it in either the JP1 file section or the R/C Pronto file section. Such a file would have told me what signals it uses, which would have let me see if they are similar to any other brand. I also checked the online codelist for the One For All URC_8820 remote and it doesn't list the Insignia brand either.

Do you still have the original remote? If so, the best I can suggest is that you buy a JP1 learning remote and JP1 cable, capture the signals and create an upgrade for this set.

Owners with a UEI remotes have had success with Admiral/Emerson tv code 0463 and Mitsubishi Tv code 0150. And some who have tried these codes haven't had success with them, so theres more then 2 codests used in insignia Tv's. In your remote give Emerson and Mitsubishi tv codes a try.

I did some Google searching this and found this post (in the "Insignia TV Code for Direct TV Remote" thread that you mentioned earlier) that states that code 10463 works with the DirecTV remote. The DTV remote is made by UEI, which means that that code is the same as the TV/0463 code found in most other UEI remotes, such as those sold under the "One For All" and "Radio Shack" brand names.

I dod some further searching and found the manual for the DRC450. I can tell from looking at the manual that this is also a UEI remote and it includes the TV/0463 code, and this code is listed under "Sansui" as hinted in that thread. This remote also includes a search function (the 9-9-0 command) which lets you try and find codes yourself.

If I understand you correctly when you say "No hint in the "Insignia TV Code for Direct TV Remote" thread in the "Satellite, Cable & HDTV" section has yeilded positive results.", I take this to mean that you tried the TV/0463 code and it didn't work. Can I also assume that you tried the 9-9-0 search feature and didn't find a code that way either? If both of these statements are true, I think it's safe to say that your Motorola remote simply doesn't have a code for the particular Insignia model that you have.

For others that find this thread via a search, if your remote is a UEI remote, try the TV/0463 code. Alternatively, if your remote has a code search function, give that a try as the Insignia's seem to be re-badged versions of other brand TVs, so the chances of you finding a code are pretty good.

The only universal I have seen with a code listed for Insignia tv's, is the newly released URC R5. And the Insignia Tv code in it doesn't match a single TV code in the OFA 8820 or 10820.

So if your Tv doesn't respond to UEI code 0463 or 0150, you're probaby out of luck.

I have an Insignia IS-HDPLTV42 plasma TV. The remote just went kaput today. I had hoped there was an easy answer to the question, "How do I make this other remote talk to my set?" Best Buy is a version of hell for me and I will resist going there to get a new remote as long as I can. I am a bit of a tinkerer so I ripped open the remote. The first thing I noticed is that the collector and base pins on the output transistor (S8050) were bridged by flux. This would reduce the amplitude of the output signal. I did notice that right from the start the remote seemed to need to be closer that I would like to the tv. The chip is F008-03 which I am affraid looks like an in-house number. It is a 44pin smd package. It also appears that only half of the ic is being used. The 1k pull down resistor attached to the Xtal is dammaged. Part of the outer coating is scraped off.

I gave the technical stuf in the hopes that one of the gurus would recognize something and be able to crack this riddle.

I have looked at the Insignia web site for remote codes and for this set (IS-HDPLTV42) they list the codes as un-learnable. This seems fishy to me. Are they not just a sequence of on off in IR light that if one has a receiver could be captured and repeated? Curious eh?

Remote control signals are indeed just an IR light being turned on and off, but there is also a carrier frequency to consider. While most remote signals use a carrier frequency between 38kHz and 40kHz, some use frequencies much higher which are difficult for learning remotes to capture.

However, in this case, your "fishy" suspicion is most likely correct.

In all likelyhood, the correct code for a "One For All" remote for your TV is TV/0463. This code uses the NEC2 protocol, which is probably the single most common IR protocol around, so if a learning remote cannot capture this signal, it's not a learning remote!

wow, I had all about given up hope since I wasn't getting replies or help... and here I see a dozen replies now...

the main thing is... I am not completely sure I am doing the code search right... the reason is I unprogrammed my VCR which I already have a code for... than I tried to do the code search and I couldn't get the code for the VCR...

If you have the time and effort, I would greatly appreciate some help with it. I don't mind you going step by step treating me as if I am a stupid child... because honestly, I am probably making a stupid childish mistake as I am trying to do it...

First things first, please confirm that you have tried TV/0463 and can verify that it doesn't work. Then try the following steps to search for a code...

SEARCHING FOR YOUR CODE
If your home entertainement device does not respond to the DRC450 after trying all of the codes listed for your brand, or if your brand is not listed at all, try searching for your code. For example, after trying all of the codes for your TV, you still cannot get the DRC450 to operate your TV, then:
  1. Turn on your TV.
  2. On the DRC450, press and hold TV (at least 6 seconds) until you see the programming mode start. Each of the mode key lights will turn off and on sequentially, starting with AUDIO on through TV, and the sequence will repeat twice. During this time, release TV and wait until it’s lit continuously.
  3. Press the (Up) cursor key once to start the search mode. NOTE: In the search mode, the DRC450 will send IR codes from its library to the selected component, starting with the most popular codes first. When the device responds to a subsequent key command (e.g., POWER), the correct device code will be found.
  4. Press POWER once. The TV key will light on and off, showing that an IR code has been sent.
  5. If your television does not turn off, press the (Up) cursor key once again to call up the next IR code and press POWER once again.
  6. If your television still does not turn off, repeat step 5 as many times as needed until your TV turns off.
  7. When your television does turn off, a working code has been found. Press OK once to save the code and the TV key will blink three times, confirming the selection.
  8. To search for the codes of your other devices, repeat steps 1 through 7, but substitute the appropriate mode key (i.e., VCR/DVD, CABLE, or AUDIO) for the device you are searching for.
