What to call the new forum? I was going to suggest "PDA Remote Controls" which is maybe a little narrow in two ways: "PDA" seems to imply "Palm" and the application is more than just remote controls.

I think I'd be happy with "PDA/HPC Remote Controls" even if the threads go beyond just URC's. It fits the patterns of current forum names.

Maybe a little pretentious to call it "PDA/HPC Entertainment Controlers" or something like that but I have hopes that that is where the discussions would eventually end up.

Brian,

You might want to get the hardware IR module available at:

[Link: pacificneotek.com]

This should extend the range and make the angle much less critical.

Mike & Dan,

Thanks for your replies to my IR signal strenght problem. Mike, as I said in my post, I already have the OmniRemote IR module.

Dan, I may have to go with an IR extender or an RF converter. I'm just a bit disappointed in the OmniRemote module's strength/coverage. Maybe retraining will help.

Retraining probably won't help. It is quite directional. There just is a limited range (but with my Sony components, it is not a problem at all. Not as good as with say an RS1994, but definitely plenty of power. But with the IR extender, the Palm/Visor is a wonderful remote. It just has a lot of extra things you can do with the PDA as far as the whole entertainment experience is concerned.........-Greg

All,

I have created a "PDAs as Remote Controls Forum" at http://www.hometheateruniverse.com. I hope you will all stop by and join the discussion. Just click on the Forums link at the top of the page.

With ORDesktop and new versions of OmniRemote it seems that this segment will continue to grow. It will be up to us as the users to push developers to continue to make great products.

Hope to see you there!
Brian

Thanks Brian! I'll check it out!

But with all due respect, I still hope Daniel creates a similar forum here, so that we can have a central place to go and not only discuss PDA/HPCs and their use as remote controls/entertainment assistants, but also compare them with all of the other remotes discussed on this forum.

But, don't get me wrong, I do appreciate your setting up that forum and will participate!!! -Greg

Anyone thought of software for palm to put tvguide/cd titles in it where you could pick a song and cd would auto be picked and played, pick a tv show, hit watch or record and the right devices would be setup?

GregoriusM,

I agree with you 100% about having the forum here. If we get a forum for PDAs here I'll probably remove the one at HTU. Unless it gets real popular real quick, that is.

Thanks,
Brian
