I dropped my 15-1994, and the light no longer works. I remember reading (possibly in this thread) that there was some way to repair this. I think some reference to a transformer was mentioned. Anyone have information that would help me out?

Is there a place where I could buy this JP1 interface to program the 1994?
I am...lets say...good at building stuff like that.

Thank you in advanced.

15-1994 dropped and broken transformer

I knocked my remote off the arm of my couch and it fell 14 inches to the carpeted floor and the transformer ripped loose from the PC board. The backlight quit working because of this. Rat Shaft offered to repair it at about the same cost as a new one. No thanks Rat Shaft.

My friend just bought two new 15-1994's and he brought one over for me to probe. I gathered the following information with a DVOM.

Transformer is as follows;

output side = 2216 ohm (primary)

input side = 16 ohm (secondary)

90 - 95 VAC output (secondary output)

There are 5 pins present, only FOUR are used, one side has two pins and the other has three pins, the middle pin is not connected to anything is apparently used as a key to ensure polarity is correct when installed.

I don't know where to find a replacement, Rat Shaft is no help. Digikey has lots of transformers but they are mostly listed in "micro henrys" and I don't know how to convert ohms to "micro henrys", I -forgot- all that stuff over 30 years ago.

Anyone got any insight on this or a lead on where to get a replacement??

Thanks!!

I hate to admit this, but I too dropped my 15-1994, and naturally the light no longer worked. I went to Radio Shack, purchased a new one, and put the broken one back into the box for a return and refund. How sleazy is that? Honestly, I just think that one or two drop tests in their early stages of development might have yielded a more sturdy connection.

I treat the new remote with kid gloves.

I've read in this thread about the tendancy for the transformer that powers the back lighting to brak loose for the circuit board. I haven't purchased this yet, but wondering if the internal construction would lend itself to hot-melt-gluing the transformer to make it more impact resistant.

Thanks.....

I think there's already some hot glue on it, but sure, you could add more, or if your unit breaks, you could try soldering and glueing it back in place.

My 15-1994 has this backlight problem: the upper has no backlights but the lower half had backlights. Anybody has a clue on how to fix this? I disassemble and assembled it and the problem still exists.

There's a simple new way to build a jp1 interface,
available at this site, that uses just a DB25
connector, one resistor, one diode, and a cable.
It's a great way to back up your remote's memory,
and gives you the ability to highly customize
the remote.

Where's this schematic at? I'd be very interested in this. :) I scoured the group, did a search for JP1 cable's and schematics, and so forth but with little luck.

Btw, I work at Radio Shack myself, and for a LONG time I had NO clue that this much stuff could be done with the 1994. I was just simply looking for a device code that I was hoping someone else had. I almost bought the Producer for $100, now I'm looking into a JP1 cable. :)

I presented this webpage to my manager. His response was, "Don't tell the customers this." I asked why, he said, "Cover your assests my friend... If they do this, and reverse that JP1 cable, and fry the remote, *_WE_* have to replace it. And I don't have the money to replace $30 remotes on a whim of your advice to jackass's that can't understand what your telling them. And we have had some major jackass's come in. the majority of the customers will understand, and take it at there own risk, but the old farts that come in here are a different story."

Anyways... thanx for all your help in advance.

David,
This should be in a thread of it's own as nobody will ever find the info in this thread, so I have made one...

Hi to all,
Q. Will the 19-1994 control the X-10 modules directly or do I need to purchase an X-10 receiver that will retransmit the signal to the modules? I should say that I only want to control two light switches, one of which is tree way.
Anyone knows this?
Thank you,
John

X10 devices need an X10 signal to work them, which is sent via the power lines, so whatever type of remote you use, you will need a conversion module of some sort.

If you use an official X10 remote, which sends RF signals, you will need an RF-to-X10 converter, this is a small module with an antennae that plugs in to an electrical socket.

If you use a remote like the 15-1994, you will need an IR-to-X10 converter, this is a device that will receive the infrared signal from the remote and convert it into the X10 signal. The model number of this box is IR543 and it's available from several places, including radio Shack, Smart Home, etc. It costs between $22 and $40 depending on where you get it.

The cheapest place that I've seen it is here:
