Dear Remote Central members,

First we would like to thank Daniel for creating a dedicated forum for the RC9800i. We feel this is an exciting new product that takes a new look at controlling your Audio and Video devices and combining the new area of multi-media control.

The RC9800i will be available in the US mid May and will be launched later this year at the IFA show in Berlin for Europe.

To get a general understanding of the RC9800i and its capabilities please visit
www.homecontrol.philips.com

As several questions have come up already in the forum regarding the capabilities of the RC9800i, we will try to give a brief explanation here.

When we set out to create the Philips RC9800i we had two goals in mind. First create a remote that a general user is able to set up without having to use a PC and secondly incorporate control of multimedia content that resides on a PC in a home network. This means the RC9800i is not a Pronto. The Pronto range can be customized and is more targeted at the custom installation and the PC savvy consumer that has the knowledge to create their own interface, macros and overall system logic. The RC9800i creates its own interface that is not customizable.

To make it simple to set up, the RC9800i incorporates a wizard in the device that helps configure what A/V devices you want to control. After that the remote goes one step further and by asking questions becomes intelligent about the devices in the system. It figures out how devices are interconnected, delay times for the different products, the most efficient way to tune channels, etc. The RC9800i then uses this information and generates an activity based user interface, which includes macros to automatically correctly switch all devices for that specific activity. It also keeps track of the status of equipment. Again all this on the device without the need for a PC and in front of the equipment you are trying to control.

As mentioned the second part of the RC9800i is the control of multimedia content on the PC. WiFi capability is incorporated in the remote so it can attach to a wireless network in the home. By doing so the RC9800i is able to do three things. First you are able to browse multimedia content residing on a PC in the network. The PC will need to be running a UPnP server which we provide with the RC9800i both for PC and Mac. You can even view your digital pictures and listen to your MP3 files on the remote. Secondly if you have an UPnP compliant media adapter connected to your TV or Audio system you can browse your PC content on the remote and then send it to the adapter via WiFi and UPnP. Thirdly the WiFi connection is used to pull in program guide data from the internet. This data can be displayed on the remote so you do not need to bring up guide information on the large TV screen.

As an added bonus you can stream MP3 directly to your audio system. When you are listening to MP3 files on the remote and you dock the unit in the charger station the audio signal can be routed through the line out to a stereo system.

First it was March.

Then it was April.

Now you claim "mid May".

Shhhh, don't tell anyone but...it's already mid May and still not here.

Good sign!

One of Philips largest distributers setup this unit this week...

Typically they would not set it up if it wasn't going to be coming somewhat soon.

What's that mean 'setup'? Are you saying they actually have one and are configuring it or what, a production one?

I was refering to them setting up the RC9800i model in the system to accept orders. According to Philips latest shipping reports, which were updated last Friday, the first shipment of RC9800i's was scheduled to ship on 5-12.

We're expecting to have inventory sometime in the next two weeks.

That's great news. I'm seriously interested in one of these but because of the ipronto, I'm not going to go for it until there is some real feedback.

Say Hideflifestyle1, arent you the same person who stated:

"Right now it looks like the entire new lineup of Pronto's aren't scheduled to be released until... maybe September."

So now you now claim that you are expecting to have inventory within the next two weeks.

Why dont you just post back when you actually have them in your hands so we can all stop speculating and order them from you. Fair enough?

Yes, that's me... sorry that the initial date I was given was wrong.

I won't post again until the units are in stock. Thanks!

I'm not a moderator and this isnt my site. I didnt even mean to suggest that you dont post anymore. All I meant was that it is best not to comment on ship dates or inventory supplies until you get actual units in you hand.

Now you made me feel bad like I frightened you off or something.

Post anything you like, we are all here to gather information and get the best pricing so please don't stop posting about other info you may aquire along the way.

Very sorry, i didn't intend to imply that I wouldn't post anymore on the unit. Just meant that I will refrain from posting on the availability until I know that they're available to ship.

Any additional information I receive on the remote that I think might be useful, I will post as soon as I receive.

Hope this clears things up... please don't feel bad!

It appears that the RC9800i will be limited to ONLY MP3 files. Hopefully, Phillips will increase that to other formats such as AAC (although the iTunes Store AAC format is currently not accesible by 3rd party vendors as Apple has yet to release the necessary code / information due to copyright concerns). Also, it appears that users will be limited to using the Phillips Server Software instead of the more widely accepted Music Server applications such as iTunes. That is unfortunate. I have downloaded the MAC version of the upcoming Music Server software and I was disappointed. Not only does it not have the bells and whistles of other competing Music Server applications, it performs sluggishly. Lastly, I suspect that UPnP compatibility will be more difficult to deliver than promised / hoped as I have yet to get any information on compatibility with the ROKU Soundbridge. The guys at ROKU are aware of the upcoming release but have yet to obtain an RC9800i to BETA test the unit with their Soundbridge line of products and Phillips has not commented on this issue either. I admit I am a pessimist by nature, and hope that these shortcomings are just due to my pessimism or will soon be rectified by Phillips. I am concerned that this product will only integrate well with other Phillips products. If true, that is a shame as this could be a really terrific product.

What happened to mid may? If they delay it any more I'm not going to have the patience to wait and just buy another 7000
