Just got this remote ... it's my first Activity-based remote. I thought I understood the concept well, and for the most part it works as I expected ... but there is one thing that troubles me. My cable provider offers several music channels, so I have an Activity to watch Cable and another to Listen to Cable. Watch cable involves the receiver, TV and cable box, whereas Listen to Cable involves only the receiver and cable box. So far so good. Here's the issue: when I am watching TV and I elect to switch to Listen to cable, it leaves the TV on. Shouldn't it turn the TV off? That's what I thought Activity-based remotes were all about. If I have to show my wife how to navigate all the way back to the individual device control just to shut off the TV, the concept loses a lot of the promise.

So, did I screw something up? Is it a device issue? Or am I expecting too much?

Thanks!

If a watch activity is the first selected, the TV will stay on until turned off. This is what I've found, and it's a simple matter of turning of the TV. One option is to turn all off, and then Listen to Cable. I assume the Listen to Cable activity works correctly, and won't turn on the TV?

Thanks for the answer. Yes, listen to Cable works correctly. I am a little surprised at the answer. A 'simple matter of turning off the TV' requires navigating several screens to get to the individual device control, or using a separate remote, or turning off the TV the old fashioned way!

Is this true for all activity remotes?

I can't say, as the only activity remote I've had is the RC9800i. You could post your question in the Harmony forum, and see what kind of response you get. I'm going to be returning mine though, as I prefer the programmability of the Pronto TSU7000 I got.

If you get the response you wanted in the Harmony forum, you may want to check out the upcoming Harmony 1000. It looks a little like the Philips, but is Logitech's first real LCD touchscreen remote - but it's also almost twice as much.

And as far as I can tell, it doesn't have WiFi, so it doesn't do uPNP stuff either.

As for the price, as it happens, the company I work for gets a great discount on Logitech stuff, so I'd be in the same price range. But I'm not ready to make that switch yet.

So the other Pronto remotes treat my issue the same? That is, if you switch from an Activity involving 3 devices to one involving 2 (both of which were in the first Activity) it doesn't switch the third off? Remember, this device was not configured to remain on always.

If I remember to go in to the Fix area on Watch Cable and turn the TV off before I go to Listen to Cable, all is OK, though I think I'll have to turn it back on manually later.

I'm still a bit confused by this less-than-perfect definition of Activity (admitedly, this is my opinion.)

Anybody else watching this thread have an opinion?

The Philips RC9800i is not a "Pronto" remote. The Philips Pronto series are programmable, the RC9800i is not - it can learn IR codes but that doesn't mean programmable. So with a Pronto you can program it to do anything you want. But there is a learning curve to Pronto programming if you've never done it before, and it will take longer to setup than an Activity based remote.

My error ... I knew that (though I often see it advertised as an IPronto) ... but my question stands unaswered. Does the fact that the Pronto line is more programmable mean they can be set up to do that?

Or are you telling me the Pronto line is not Activity based?

The Pronto line is not activity based, nor device based. Also the iPronto is a different remote as well, although it's also programmable hence the Pronto name. All Prontos are programmable, which means *you* can turn them into activity remotes or device style remotes depending on how you wish to program it.
