Can anyone recommend a media adapter that works with the RC9800i? Apparantly only the Philips SL300i and SL400i will work currently, and they're no longer made according to what I've read. Has anyone got a RC9800i remote and some other UPnP media adapter working together?
What is it what you want? Do you want to stream music only or also movies? For music only the sl400i is very suitable, it has a nice display and works seamlessly with the remote. The sl400i is less suitable for movies, because it has difficulties with high bit rate divx and xvid files (frame freezes, shuttering sound etc). Unfortunately the new slm5500 of Philips which doesn't suffer from the high bit rate issues is NOT compatible with the remote.
I own a sl400i, slm5500 and a sla5520. This last one is a music only device which I didn't test with the remote, but I've read somewhere that it is not compliant. If your looking for a music only device, I can test the sla5520 for you.
There are some people using the remote with the d-link dsm devices and reported issues with the remote so apparently these are also not fully compatible. Good luck in finding your perfect media adapter, which I did not found yet.
Thanks for the info De Pampi. Pictures and music would be the main use for the media adapter, with movies being second. I guess I could always just write Dixv and Xvid stuff to DVD and use my DVD player for that. Is the Philips sl400i still in production? I've had trouble locating that unit.
I think you're right that it is no longer in production. Maybe you can find a second hand one, because a lot of users are not satisfied with the performance of the movie playback. I now use it solely for music in combination with the 9800i and that combination rocks! Wherever I am in the house I can control the music. It even automatically shuffles I can skip tracks and pause the music. For photo's I don't use it much because I then need the PMM software as twonky won't work. Unfortunately the upnp protocol still leaves a lot of freedom for the developers. Therefore the 9800i cannot control all these devices.
So if one didn't care to run MP3s or see pictures on the RC9800i, can the remote still control media servers such as the DLink DSM-520?
I'm thinking the 2 Philips media servers (sl 300/400) that's compatible with the RC9800i have too many issues that still need to be addressed, and likely won't. But if I did get something like the DLink 520, can I teach the RC9800i's "PC" Activity the DLink's commands if it's not already supported?
Thanks for the info De Pampi. Can you recommend a decent and and not too expensive media server (no more than $250) that could be used with the RC9800i? I don't care about streaming to the remote itself, just that the remote can control most of the media server's features.
EDIT: Are you still using the RC9800i yourself, and if so what media server did you end up with?

I'm still using the 9800i. The media server I bought is the slm5500, because I thought this is a streamium device (=compatible) unfortunately it is NOT. It is not even possible to add this device as an UpNp renderer in the add devices menu. In this menu the 9800i looks on the network for devices and because the slm5500 doesn't respond such that the 9800i will see it, it doesn't show up. And if no device shows up the next button is greyed out. Therefore I had to add the slm5500 as an MCE device (and learn all ir codes manually) which is not the best option because I have now a record button and a TV guide which doesn't make sense for the slm5500.
The slm5500 is a reasonable device, but has, as all these devices issues. To name some: no srt subtitle support no AC3 stream output through digital coax cable only stereo (something the sl400i has) support for the 9800i
