I’m trying to use discrete ON and OFF codes with my Panasonic DVD-RV31 DVD player. I have found various codes and even tried generating my own codes using some of John Fine’s tools, but all produce the same result. The discrete ON codes work as expected. The discrete OFF codes turn the unit off as expected, but seem to cause the DVD player to be put into a strange state on the next power on. When I use the discrete OFF, the next time I turn the unit on (using a discrete ON, or a power toggle code), the front panel of the DVD player displays it’s normal "Welcome..." banner and then displays "CLOSE", at this point the DVD player seems "locked up" and no keys on the DVD player remote work (except the power toggle button). If I use another discrete OFF the unit does turn off, but I get the same behavior on the next power on (regardless of how I power it on). The only way to get DVD player working again is to turn it off via a power toggle ON/OFF code. As long as I power off using the power toggle code I can use the discrete ON code without a problem, so I feel that it must be the discrete OFF code that’s causing the issue. I’m currently using a TSU3000, but I have a TSU7500 coming next week. Below, I have listed the codes that I generated, but all the codes I have tried produce the same result. I’m wondering if anyone has seen something like this before, or if anyone has some suggestions? Toggle ON/OFF:

What happens if you sent it a discrete on, wait a second then send it another discrete on? My Sony DVD likes to come on then immediately turn off so I send it two power ons and it stay's on.

Thanks for the suggestion, but actually it stays on just fine. Problem is that it just continuously displays "CLOSE" on the front display and won’t do anything else. I have tried multiple discrete ON commands in a row, but no joy...

Oh well. It was worth a shot. I think my problem is that my DVD player is getting old. I like it because it's a 5 disc. I don't know where I would put one of those 400 disc beasts.

There isn't anything strange or messed up about your discrete off IR signal (nor any of the others). The symptom you describe must be either a firmware bug or a strange feature designed into the DVD player. I guess that means you don't have a usable discrete off command. Some people are OK with kludges such as using discrete on followed by power toggle instead of discrete off. I wouldn't be happy with that (I'd rather not make macros that need discrete off if I don't have one). But your preferences may be different.

Guys... this was a known thing on that generation of Panasonics. RP56 adn below had this behaviour. On = Play Other commands or delays Play Off = Play Play Other commands Power Its nothing to do with the IR codes... its just the firmware of the players. I think there was a Firmware upgrade floating around... don't know if it fixed this but improved things like trick play from what I was told.

Or, you may have another code you have overlooked, such as "standby" instead of "off". The symptoms you describe tend to point to this. Sometimes discrete "OFF", does indeed do more to a device than just turn it off. Sometimes it actually powers down to a different state. Dave

Thanks for everyone’s input. I have tried all 256 codes that can be generated for the device, but nothing worked correctly. I have now finally found a very old thread on another site that discussed this as a known firmware problem for that generation of Panasonic DVD players. I also found a firmware update that worked on the player, but still no joy. I guess that I have to either use a kludge, or just be satisfied with the power toggle command. Since this is an older and rarely used device I think I will just go without the discrete power functionality.

There is no standby command on that generation. The other stupid idea I used was this... On= Play Play Off= Discrete Off Delay Power Delay Play Delay Power This leave the device in the off position but ready to take a power on command in terms of Play.

If you have that ISO for the update... could you send it my way? You can get the update here: [Link: firmwareupdate.us] the instructions on the page are fairly clear. It will cost you at least $1.00 to download (pretty reasonable I think). The payment is through PayPal, but you don’t actually need a PayPal account. Just click the "PayPal Donate" logo and you can use your credit card on the next screen. Once you get a confirmation screen from PayPal there will be a link something to the effect of "return to previous site" you must click this link to get access to the download. I gave a $2.00 "donation", downloaded the update, burnt it to a disk, and upgraded the DVD player without any problems. The download is almost 90 megabytes.

Just did the update from that link... all seems well. Didn't bother trying the IR codes because I think they are still the same.
