I had a TSU1000 many, many years ago. I sold it when I upgraded my home theater and never found time to re-program it. Now I've upgraded my home theater once again and I'm unable to get the Harmony remote to do what I want.

I picked up a TSU7000 from ebay and now I'm getting started on programming. I've studied a few of the .pcf files available here, especially Daniel Tonk's amazing work (of art). There's some good PENG info in Daniel's review of the TSU7000 and there are some nuggets in the unofficial FAQ and in various forum posts. What I'm really looking for is more of a high level step-by-step -- suggestions for programming style, not where to click in the gui.

Should I start with an empty .pcf and copy devices/pages from existing .pcfs? Or should I start with an existing .pcf, copy similar devices to my own devices, then eventually delete the devices which are not mine?

In Daniels' .pcf, he has a whole section called "IR Codes". These are the plain pages with nothing more than a bunch of buttons & IR codes. Then he has several sections of Devices that have pretty buttons and link to the IR Code section. It seems like an extra level of hierarchy to me. Is there some advantage to his technique that I'm not seeing?

Thanks in advance ....

The Ultimate Pronto Guide, from ProntoWizard.com, is an excellent place to start.

The advantage of using separate IR code pages is that, if you ever change devices (a new DVD player, for example), or even just re-learn an IR code, you won't have to search your pcf for all uses of that button. All instances of the Play button, for example, would reference just the single instance of a Play button on the IR code page for the device.

Also you will get the most out of the unit if you upgrade the firmware to 3.7.7 or higher. I think it's 3.8.XX (not sure of the last numbers) but it is the last firmware update for the TSU 7000, 7500's. You may already have the update. Look under the settings (looks like a small pronto icon) to see what the firmware version is. you will need to use 2.1.8 version of pronto edit software if you are at firmware 3.7.7 or higher. All the software and firware downloads are available at remotecentral.
I also picked up a backup 7000 from ebay. ( a lot more showing up lately) I have an issue with the ebay unit as it has older firmware on it and I haven't been able to update it to 3.7.7 using the virtual XP version on my laptop. I am going to reserect one of my old XP machines and see if I can get to update the firmware that way. If not, don't know what I'll do as I have a highly tweeked setup on my current setting using Firware 3.7.7 and the latest pronto edit software.

Thanks, 411avatar. Your explanation of why I should maintain an IR code page for each device is exactly the kind of information I'm looking for.

Another question -- Daniel set up some "Device List No IR" pages. What's the benefit of this?

When you press a device on the Device List page of these remotes, the ActionList of the device is executed (do you input setup there, etc) followed by a Jump to the first visible page in the device or to the page you specify at the end of the ActionList.

Now, consider that you are in the middle of watching a movie and need to flip to another page to play a game. You go Home, play the game, then need to go back into the movie. If you don't want all the input setup / volume adjust sequence to run upon re-entering the movie device, you need to do a page jump without first executing all setup commands.

This is what the Device List No IR pages is used for. To jump to a page in the device without first executing all the commands.

Thanks, DonA. The firmware was at 3.4.4, or something like that. Fortunately I have a netbook that's running Win7 32 bit so I was able to update the firmware from there. I had a 'ell of a time making any connection at all until I realized that the USB connector on the Pronto is flaky. Thank goodness the dock has its own USB connector or I would have been screwed.
