TSU7000 with cracked screen!

Oh man, my 4-year-old and I were playing and she hit the screen with her light saber (yeah ;-) and ended up cracking it. There appears to be a plastic top soating which is still in-tact but the glass inside has an 1/8" hole and cracks extending to the edges. Though the display works perfectly fine, the touch sensitivity is gone and almost nothing works (my guess is the glass is somehow what provides the feedback as to where your finger is in relation to screen position).

A quick call to Phillips was a huge dissapointment, the support person told me they would swap it with a refurb for $476 (isn't that close to a great street price?) but they wouldn't be able to repair it. He suggested a repair shop but one call to them (they laughed) I was told to chuck it, Phillips does not provide replacement parts (great!).

This unit is maybe 7 months old, I hate to buy a new one for what appears to be cosmetic and repairable (though it may not be in reality). Buy.com doesn't sell them anymore and I am simply unsure if this is just poor suport from Phillips or I am SOL...

Anyone help me out with some good advice? If the verdict is buy a new one can someone recommend a good retailer?

Thanks in advance,

Jack

Search for +Replace +TSU7000 +screen for last 2 years and I think you'll find a parts source for the glass top.

Is the remote not still in warranty? I have just returned my TSU7000 to have it's screen replaced and they didn't have a problem.... try calling 1-866-845-3578, I did!

Lyndel,

After searching using my own search string and then again with your suggestion (plus a few variations) I can't seem to find anything except reviews. If you have any more info I'd sure appreciate it.

I ordered a brand new TSU7000 last night, I am not giving Philips $476 for a new one (which will be refurbished) when I can spend an extra $100 and keep mine for parts (or be lucky enough to fix it and have 2)...

Thanks for helping out!

Jack

The key to searching is to use the + symbol which I suggested and search for 1 or 2 years back. The post you want is by a user named hansenmick and here's the link.

Opps... just missed this thread. I am over here in Potoamc MD today and we have like 2 or 3 7000s that never went into use. If I complained to my boss enough... well since you could have picked it up...

Anyways. Guess I need to take inventory of sitting around things at the office and put them in the for sale section.

Thank you my friend, I apreciate the extra effort to find the article for me. I ordered a new TSU7000 Thursday (the vendor is odd, he called me asking if I wanted a TSU7500 because he was having a hard time with the 7000, I said you either have it or not but he said their disclaimer said they had 3 days to ship so he was still going to get one, I thought that odd).

Anyway, I also ordered the new glass top so I guess this means I'll have 2 working units (nothing like a backup!)...

Thanks again!

You know, I would have but Lyndel turned me on to a source for the replacement glass touchscreen. Since I ordered a new one already, I think I'll try and sell it or keep it whole as a backup (sorry)...

Thanks again Lyndel!

There is an HP iPaq h5150 on eBay for US$100.00. May be an inexpensive way to get that screen replaced.

So, follow up...

Turns out the new replacement touchscreen worked perfectly! It even comes with the double-sided tape already installed, all you need to do is peel off the backer, line 'er up and press. Those interested in doing this (or taking notes in case it happens to them), taking the TSU-7000 apart only requires a #6 torx and removing 7 screws (4 from the case and then 3 to remove the circuit board from the frame to gain access to the screen face).

The tricky parts (not really hard, just precise) are carefully removing the old glass touchscreen by slowly slicing along under it with an Xacto knife to get it off (basically cutting through the 1/8" strip of double-sided tape). If you pull off what appears to be a plastic protector, separate from the glass, it is simply the screen separating into glass and plastic film laminate, these are not 2 items and you don't need to preserve the plastic (as I first thought) to apply over the new glass panel, the parts are pressed and molded together. Hint, once you get the old glass off, use fresh tape to gently pull the old double-sided tape lose by simply sticking and pulling over and over to pull off the sticky goo.

The other tricky part is the connector for the touchscreen, this is a flat ribbon, no more than a hairs-thickness, perhaps 3/8" wide and needs to be treated with respect. It doesn't jam into the connector or wiggle into the connector but rather the connector has an arm that swings up (really, I know it's small but look close, it's like a swing arm that pulls up) to open the connector so you can gently slide in the ribbon connector.

Other than those 2 items, no problem, 1 hour repair, $60! - JFetter

Jfetter,

Thanks

Jfetter,

Did you notice that the new glass top is larger than the old one? With the old one the metal frame of the lcd sat on the plastic tabs which are in the corners of the remote housing to keep it in place. If you did get a larger glass top then it is possible that the glass top itself is sitting on the tabs and will crack. Just file or dremmel back the tabs so the lcd frame is sitting side to side with the tabs not sitting on the tabs.
