I'm trying figure out how to program consistant volume levels. Can anyone explain what "memory", "recall" and "bank" functions mean?

My Yamaha HTR-5280 (aka RX-V800) has extended IR codes for settings A through F for "Volume Memory", "Volume Recall", and "Volume Bank". I have searched and downloaded Yamaha's "Project Yamaha Custom Installation Handbook", extended IR codes, and discreet codes.

I believe that executing "volume memory" will store the volume db into the receiver's memory and "volume recall" will access that stored db level. If that is correct, what does "volume bank" do? If I'm not correct, what do these actions accomplish?

I hope someone can explain this to me. Thanks.

FYI, only A-C and Home work on the 5280. It was my old receiver.

As I indicated above, I have downloaded and read that information manual. It addresses memory and recall features, but not the "bank" feature. I'm sure it's something obvious to everyone but me. Can you fill me in?

Also, thanks for the tip on settings A-C. But, since only Home works, do you mean to say that Volume Memory and Recall do not?

There are Home Banks A-C and Volume Banks A-C.

Here's how I used them.

The Home Banks (the memory feature) will save state of everything such as selected input, surround field, and I believe, levels. So, to use these simply do the following:

1. Manually setup everything you want such as Input, Surround levels, Surround field. Then, send the Code for Set Home Bank A.

2. Now, change the input to some source other than the one previously selected. Then, send the Code for Set Home Bank B.

3. Now, muck around with the input, sound field, levels.

4. Now, send the code to Recall Home Bank A or Home Bank B. What you should see is that the input and surround fields and possibly the levels should revert to the settings you saved in Step 1 or Step 2, depending on which Recall you selected.


The volume settings behave in the same manner. However, as Yamaha had some forethought, they separated these from the Home Banks. They operate in the same manner with the Set/Recall capabilities. Here's how I used them. At one time, I had CDs and DVDs in a DVD Jukebox. I had one volume bank dedicated for CDs and one for DVDs as the input levels are different depending on Disc type. Depending on the disc type, I'd send the recall command for the volume level I'd saved for each media type using the set command. For example, Vol Bank A was used for CDs, Vol Bank B, for DVDs, Vol Bank C for FM Tuner. Note that although it appears that I was using these for input control, I was not. I was using them to select preset volume levels based on what I was doing on the receiver. I never used the Home Bank settings as I had macros and simple help screen animations that I walked through while setting everything up. However, in theory, they should work just fine.

Remember, the 5280 only supports A-C and not A-F as higher end receivers do.

Hope this explanation helps.

The best way to figure all this out is to play with all the codes available in the RXV800/900 CCF in the files section. Remember that there are 'reset' procedures on the Yamaha site should you screw something up. Look 'em up, write em down in case you need them in a hurry.

You have helped me figure out how to present volume on my Yamaha; somthing I have been wondering about for years. Thank you! Thank you!

Unfortunately, I'm still not getting the entire picture. I was able to successfully set a specific volume level by:
-manually setting sound level to the db I want
-pressing the "volume memory" button while pointing to the receiver
-pressing the "volume recall" whenever I want to set the volume to that preset db.

However, I still do not know what "volume bank" and "volume main" means. Does the volume bank increase the number of preset dbs I can set?
i.e.
-VB A: VM A, VM B, VM C
-VB B: VM A, VM B, VM C
-VB C: VM A, VM B, VM C

I don't know specifically what bank does. I just know that A-C can be used to hold presets. FYI, this feature is one that Denon 5803s do not have, other than setting a specified level of -20 and -40db.
